ya we only had 4 inchers which werent too bad.. when the CIWS went off tho it would vibrate the tray off my table at chow 6 decks down.. those damn harriers were what got me.. I bunked with weapons platoon on 01 deck right under the after flight deck where those bastards warmed up..

I kept waiting for molten steel to pour onto my rack from the jet exhaust...

The blast from the Iowa I could feel from about 2 miles off.. can't imagine being up close and personal... you feel it in your chest when it unleashed...

I have to admit I am laughing my ass off. Thank you!

When I was Navy I was an FC, the last of the "real" Firecontrolmen trained before the rate was merged with DS and most FCs became glorified twidgets. I was one of 12 CIWS techs trained fleetwide on all CIWS NECs. While the Phalanx was my primary job, my collateral duties were shipboard search and siezure (which is part of how I ended up here....).

Anyway my hearing loss was the result of a new booter they sent to me on a junky old LSD I got stuck on for a while. This kid was smart. Really smart. Like myself, he had actually memorized all the schematics for the gun system. Little did I realize, unlike me he lacked any form of common sense, logic, or sense of responsibility.

I had scheduled a multiple run TDU shoot for the ship's M1 rating. Normally, I only allowed the most experienced gunners to actually operate the gun mounts in AAW manual for these shoots, but this kid had proven himself to be an exception. I however, am a genius, ;), and decided this was the day the booter would earn the right to stamp a dead missile on mount 21's shoulder.

I acted as Safety Observer, up on deck by the mount. The kid was understandably excited and chatting away with the TAO and my auxiliary operator in CIC via the bitch box. My job was to act as an additional lookout for aircraft and watercraft surveilance may have missed. (no lookouts during a TDU shoot in those days, far too dangerous!) CIC and the bridge gave "all clear", the Learjet and its one mile cable were screaming inbound with the towed drone. The weather was perfect and clear. The TAO and XO both agreed it was time to shoot. They contacted me via sound powered phone for the final all clear so they could give batteries release.

As per procedure, I removed my face shield, goggles and double hearing protection for the final search for small boats and aircraft. At that moment some asshole on the line had a hot mike and was discussing "batteries release". My booter heard this and mashed the fire button. I was ten feet from the aft of the mount. Instantly a 750 round burst let loose resulting in me dropping unconscious to bleed profusely from both ears.

I have suffered from permanent CHS (Cant Hear Shit) ever since. Good thing the little bastard clipped the drone in two, knocked it off the cable, and then started shooting at the pieces as the fell towards the ship or I would have skinned him alive.
I came to and stumbled down to CIC bleeding and cussing. To this day I wish I could have heard what I said as when I was done, no one would speak to me for weeks from the shoot team. :ROFLMAO:

I was originally trained as a mortarman. Spent my whole second deployment firing 81mms everyday. Feckin great being 6" away from that thing doin 8 round fire for effects. Lost a lot in my right ear as well. I say "huh?" A lot.

Hey Sludge. I completely understand that. We had CIWS on each bridge wing on my ship. (4 in all) So in addition to the 16's and the 5's we had R2D2 firing it's 2 cents as well.

I didn't trust the auto stuff so much. Seems every other shoot we were ducking and diving trying to dodge something swinging on us. When the five inchers were switched from gun to CIC control they had a bad habit of swinging forward a shooting immediately. Damn near shot the bridge and the bow a couple times.

When I was in Nam the NJ was offshore and fired missions in our area. We were inland about 7 to 10 miles I guess. When the NJ fired a mission, the ground would shake and the rounds going overhead sounded like a freight train. I always hoped that there would never be a short round. There wouldn't be enough to scrape up and put in a baggie.

I can't imagine what a large scale naval engagement during WW2 must have been like.

I have to say that I have hearing loss and if you're willing to put up with them, hearing aids really do help. I'm not going, ' what did he say?' to my wife all the time. Of course in Sludge's case and perhaps some of you other guys that have had such severe damage I'm not sure that anything would help. But it's worth checking out. You know, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I do have an aid for the left ear, but I rarely wear it as I have become an expert at reading lips and swear by closed captioning on TV. Gotta wear it for the movies or 5.1 surround sounds like 1.1!

Several things, We were on the inboard side of the USS New Jersey when we moved the shoreline back 50 yards across the Beirut beachhead. This was Lebanon 1983, the fun here wasn't as much this as the other OpSECS all going on in that same region, When her guns went off we were only 150 to 200 yards inside to the shoreline. It knocked us all sinceless we scrambled for the hatches to get back inside but not before the second salvo caught us. The impact on the side of our ship broke saltwater intake lines going to engineering. it knocked three and 4 foot waves flat. Those were fond memories. Makes me pop my jaws to clear my ears as I think about it.
The New Jersey hadnt fired before that moment since the Korean adventure mentioned above. We learned that was a bad place to be (inboard) when the ship next you is spitting 2 thousand pound shells out in large salvos. whe learned real quick hence the full stop to full reverse.

Tinitus- I have a medical background and found that there is different types of tinitus. I am not certain if I can post links here, but PTSD has tinnitus wiring sometimes so its not heard it's hallucinated. This is the type I supposedly have because as mentioned above if the ringing gets louder under stressful situations.
you can find many articles on this if you Google PTSD and tinnitus. Doctors can actually tell difference between subjective and objective Tinnitus. I am guessing most of us are a blend.
It has been 27 years so im used to it except when it gets louder and starts the snapping sound when I am being triggered.

Ahhh the Infamous Jersey deployment. She had a bit of an accuracy problem and endless misfires that damn near blew her up as well. (The definition of eternity is the time it takes to open the breach, realize the powder is smoldering and slam the breach closed before she goes off. That happened way too many times. Thats how you get grey 25 year olds) The Lebanon deployment was also one of the longest since WWII. 14 months I believe. I did a return tour with the Iowa in 89.

I think something like 75% of those married on board ended up divorced.

Yeah, being between the target and the Jersey was not a nice place. We had a mess crank try to run from the Weird Room to another hatch during gunex. A 16 incher went off while he was running. Everyone on the bridge screaming STOP STOP, CEASE FIRE! Too late. Never saw that guy again. If he had been a few more feet forward the concussion would have killed him. It will shatter every bone in your body. He may have survived but he was bleeding from every orifice.

Even practicing for war is a dangerous business. I certainly don't miss the days of f*cking around with Hezbollah. Eternal GQ and damned battle rations. We sneaked into Beirut harbor at night once. One may wonder how a 270 meter battleship sneaks, but we gave it a shot and high tailed it out of there when somebody tried to lock on to us. Big fun.

Ok...been reading and its time I see someone about my hearing, my wife has had multiple conversations with me, but I don't remember any of them, My Kids talk to me and I look at them like a zombie.
I assume using tools of the trade for 19yrs will be enough for me to say that I am deaf from work related injuries.

Hey Sabre

It's sometimes hard to make that first step but it's a good one. I, like many have the same problem. The first time I put my hearing aids on at home, I realized that I heard the birds outside singing. Brought a tear to my eye and I thought, why the hell did I wait so long. I can now hear a mouse piss on a ball of cotton a mile away. :D
