New Here
This is my first time posting in a PTSD forum. I have PTSD from 9/11/01, lived & worked in NYC at that time and survived the attacks. I moved away 18 months later to New Mexico, where I live now, but I'm still having PTSD problems.

For example last week there was a bomb scare across the street from my office. No one was allowed to leave the bldg. They ended up detonating a package just outside the window.. extremely upsetting. And now today, we had a fire alarm and had to evacuate. I am trying to be normal but sitting here on the verge opf tears, wanting to scream, and feeling so angry that this is STILL happening 8 years after the fact.

I take Zoloft every day for this because if I don't take it, I get extremely depressed and have nightmares.

Can anyone relate? Would love to connect with other people who were in NY on 9/11.

Thanks.

Welcome desert_cat, sorry to hear of your troubles, that sounds very distressing! New Mexico is a place I'd love to visit sometime. Cool username by the way.

I hope you find those New Yorkers. There are bound to be some around here.

I do think you will hear from some members in New York. In fact, there was someone in chat just last night that said they were in NYC! But...it was someone new to me and not I am not really sure which user name it was.

Glad you found us and I wish you peace as you look toward recovery and healing.

Hi desert_cat,

I'm a New Yorker and was here on 9/11.

Though my PTSD (or, rather, CPTSD) is from childhood abuse, please feel free to talk to me here or through PM. At the very least, I can relate to the context surrounding your trauma.

Thank you all

Frangipani, thanks especially. I worked downtown and was almost under the North Tower when the 1st plane hit, I walked to work in those days over the Bklyn Bridge. It's been a very long road for me, and lately I feel like my PTSD is getting worse. I have no idea why. I have anxiety and panic when I hear things like airplane engines fly over.

Were you downtown that day? Did you suffer with depression or anythiung afterwards?

Thanks again.

It was Frangipani!
Glad you two found each other to share your unique expeeriences!

DC,

I wasn't downtown that day but, rather, was working in midtown. I had actually been going through a depressive episode for most of that year and, though I finally broke down in Nov/Dec of 2001, I usually consider it "non-9/11 related".

I realize how vastly different your experience that day was compared to mine. And I'm so sorry it's still causing you to suffer. But it's completely understandable. My traumas occurred when I was around, say, 10 years old. I'm now 31. Over 20 years and I still suffer...

But I also still have hope. I've recently started therapy again because I believe that, even if I can't change some things or "get better" in a classic sense, I can still learn to manage my issues better. Sometimes that's all we can do, but it nevertheless makes a lot of difference.

I have to sign off here but I want you to know that, even though our experiences surrounding that day may not be similar, my door is always open if you want to talk about it.

You're in my thoughts as we each travel down this road to recovery. I'm wishing you the best, one New Yorker to another. :Hug_emoticon:
