Spikerola

New Here
I'm diagnosed with PTSD resulting from a childhood of neglect; a family filled with alcohol, violence and rage (father had combat PTSD from WWII); personal assaults/muggings; and finally, a 20 year marriage (now over) filled with emotional, then physical, abuse. I'm unable to work, live each day with continual anxiety, and experience the occasional panic attack. I read many of the posts prior to joining, and wow, I'm not alone!!

My psychiatrist recommended EMDR, but my flash backs consist of extreme anxiety and I'm unsure of a specific "event" from that past that elicits that emotion. Any thoughts on how to sort it all out, or doesn't that matter? Thanks all. Hugs--

Hello Spikerola,

Welcome to the forum!!!

I have PTSD from child abuse, (physical/sexual), neglect etc. I am also an adult child of an alcoholic. I am disabled, haven't worked due to the PTSD since late 1998, and I can definitely relate to the anxiety and panic attacks; (these attacks can come from seemingly nowhere and leave us in a severe state of anxiety and they often don't seem to have a trigger from the past).

I am sorry that you need to be here, but am happy that you found your way here just the same, this place is filled with information, and lots of supportive, understanding people.

healing hugs,
LH

Welcome to the forum Spikerola. :)

I have had Complex PTSD for over 25 years though I was only diagnosed 7 years ago. i have had Person Centered counseling and CBT, none of which helped me. these were done by Psychiatric Nurses and not by a trauma specialist. I have since found a Psychotherapist that practices EMDR and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) as well as most other therapies. I have found the EMDR very helpful. I do not remember some of the things that happened to me and withthe EMDR it does tend to bring these things back. My T is very careful and I feel very safe with him.

Others on here have found CBT helpful. I wouldn't vet the practitioner rather than the therapy. A good therapist will be with you all the way. There are some notes on the Wiki pages here about EMDR and I would sujest you reed thosae and study up on it before making a decision.

My T told me not to worry that I don't remember, I will in time when it is safe to do so and he will be there for me as will the wonderful folks on this forum. Not remembering is no hindrance to EMDR.

Hi Spikerola!

Welcome, you're in the right place. I don't know very much about EMDR, although I may begin treatment with it after Halloween. I'll let you know what my impressions are. I have heard that EMDR can be touchy, as it can apparently unlock repressed memory. Like I said, I know very little about it, and what I know I've only heard from others, not the most reliable or concrete info, admittedly. Take care of yourself.
