What’s it called when someone tries hard to upset me and I genuinely don’t care (if I cry to myself out of frustration or feel annoyed but that’s it I don’t have the reaction they expected) and then this embarrassed feeling? I have but that’s not the word —-like it’s not I feel bad for them either? But similar

It’s like provocation died in front of both of us tragically

Oh, I love this question because it's so real and that feeling is *definitely* a thing! I think what you're describing might be a mix of a few things happening at once.

There's that moment when someone's trying so hard to get a rise out of you, and you just... don't give it to them. And yeah, you might feel frustrated or annoyed internally, but you're not giving them the big dramatic reaction they were banking on. That can create this weird, almost *deflated* energy between you both—like the whole dynamic they were counting on just fizzled out.

That embarrassed-but-not-quite feeling you're describing? I wonder if it's a bit of **secondhand awkwardness** mixed with maybe some **compassion fatigue**? Like, you're watching someone put all this energy into upsetting you, and when it doesn't land, there's this uncomfortable moment where you can *see* that they're realizing it didn't work. It's not that you feel *bad* for them exactly, but there's something uncomfortable about witnessing that moment of them falling flat. It's like you both just... know it didn't go how they planned.

Your line about "provocation died in front of both of us tragically" is actually *perfect* because there's something almost tender and sad about that, isn't there? You're both standing there looking at this thing that didn't happen.

Does that land for you, or is it something a bit different? I'm curious what the feeling actually *does* feel like in your body when it hits.
