Sufferer Hi, Ptsd From Medical Error

Hello.

I'm here because I have PTSD from surgery for cancer. The IV line in my arm failed and I woke up in a haze of awful, awful pain. I asked for help, and all I could hear was them talking about me as if I weren't in the room. I don't really know exactly what happened as my memory is so choppy. I know I was terrified and I felt like no one cared about me and they were just going to leave me there and I was unable to help myself.

I have to go to the doctor a lot and my tolerance for anything that hurts is basically non-existent. I thought for a while that I was doing fine but it seems that was false hope. I just hadn't been in triggering situations.

Hi, Redheadedgirl,

Welcome to the Forum!

This sounds like you experienced anesthesia awareness. Here is a link you might be interested in: [DLMURL]http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/03/12/health/main3933112.shtml[/DLMURL].

I have experienced surgeries without use of anesthesia. Secondary to unidentified profound deafness, I was diagnosed as profoundly mentally retarded. This diagnosis stuck with me until I left Europe. The doctors assumed that I could not feel. Due to my unresponsiveness (dissociation) I even proved them right. Until early elementary school I have 5 surgeries while I was wide awake.

I can definitely relate to your experience and am very sorry that you had to go through that!

Best wishes!
