I Can't Sleep, Its Making Me Worse, Help Please?

I use Zolpidem - but that does not last long. On difficult nigths I use my audio books. It is quite nice to fall asleep when someone reads you a story ;)

Hey, Texas Kitty. Sorry to hear about the sleep problems; ugh, I know exactly what you mean. It can turn into a pretty vicious cycle.

Some things that have helped me in the past:
-yoga, or aerobic exercise, for about an hour every day
-meditation (I also have a Naperstek CD, but currently am listening to someone else)
-sleeping on the couch or in the guest room. Sometimes I find that a change in venue takes the pressure off of "having" to go to sleep, and I just fall asleep.
-last resort: klonopin or ambien

I prefer not to take meds for sleep, but goodness knows that I had to for quite a while before I got back on track without meds.

Good luck,
racha

I hate relying on medication, even OTC stuff... I trust herbal stuff a bit more, and have found L-theanine to help with my sleep and the anxiety as well. Two of the L-theanine (I think that's the one, I can double check to be sure if anyone is interested) and I am OUT!

Developing a ritual will help too... like taking a warm bath, or doing something relaxing, having a cup of decaf tea, going to bed at the same time each night, etc... I know they say it's best to not sleep with lights on, but I feel I HAVE to have at least a dim glow from my computer and/or a nightlight. Without these, I get more stressed and the PTSD symptoms get worse in the complete dark.

What I have found to help me the most though, has been these meditation podcasts. I think if you google Meditation Oasis, you should be able to find the site where you can download free podcasts. My therapist gave me the site, and it was truely a lifesaver. I put one of the podcasts on, and I am completely out usually within just five minutes- the fastest I've EVER fallen asleep. I feel more refreshed the next morning too, and have found that if I play the podcasts through the night, it decreases the night terrors and nightmares that I typically have. I wake up feeling better, my mood improves, my anxiety decreases... they have worked better than ANY medication I have tried. I was skeptical at first and reluctant to try. Now it has become part of my overall bedtime routine, for the most part... some nights I've skipped, but I try to stick with it, or else I start having the problems with sleep again. As long as I stick with it on a regular basis, not only does it seem to always work, but my overall mood and how I feel physically and mentally seem to improve as well.

Lack of sleep: what a nightmare! My main issues with it are that it is frustrating, boring and I feel like a freak being the only one awake in the night. At least I live alone so I don't have to worry about keeping other people awake. Normally I just listen to music, cruise the net and take my dog for walks at the beach. Have decided that I'd rather risk my safety on night walks than not as I'm not too worried about being murdered at this point (joke!) - I live in a very safe place so insomnia is not dangerous here.

Not sure how you are getting on with sleeping pills - I find these are not a true sleep and I get exactly 5 hours but wake up shattered. When I don't take them, I wake up every 1 to 1.5 hours for about half an hour and every individual sleep cycle (probably 3 in a night), is just nightmares that I spend a long time thinking about.

So, if I knew how to sleep I would definately share it. Exhaustion maybe? hasn't worked for me but everyone's a bit different - lots of walking and exercise maybe. not sure though.
