It's a confusing mess, I remember being there myself. Getting a social security lawyer helped a lot- my T knew of a good one. Needymeds is an awesome website. The local health department can be a great starting point as well, depending on your area it might through the county or the city. Mine helped me find both medical and mental health care. The trick is asking the right questions to the right people. You might run into the phrase 'severely and persistently mentally ill' or something like that- I found help hidden behind those scary words. Those words felt like a kick in the gut until I realized it was exactly what I needed until I could sort out the Social Security and Medicaid/Medicare stuff.
