I'm Finding It Hard To Sleep In A Bed

I was attacked in a bed. Not my bed. Not my mum's bed.

It just seems that whenever I sleep in a bed, no matter whose bed it is, I start panicking so much.

I've started sleeping on the floor.

I don't know what's going on :(

Hi @xanabilify - I get flashbacks and a racing heart when I lie flat on my back. The minute I go to bed things get worse.

Do you have a therapist to work through all of this with? You would need help based on your own specific experiences, I should think. You can't deal with it on your own.

I wish you the best in finding help.

I'm sorry you have to deal with that. That's a classic trigger situation. The bed any bed reminds you of the attack and triggers a flight or fight response.

You'll need to work with your therapist on that. If you're able to sleep well on the floor, then for now, I'd suggest to keep doing that. A better solution might be a couch or air mattress. A good night's sleep is too important to take lightly, so for now, whatever works.

Your therapist might have some better suggestions and something that is a better long-term solution. I used a futon for a number of years.

Do you know if any / all beds bring this reaction? Or maybe its a particular kind of bed or a particular type of blankets, pillows? Maybe there's something about the room. I ask this because sometimes triggers are not what they appear to be.

It's also important to consider good sleep hygiene. You can search for that on the forum or elsewhere on the internet. Good sleep hygiene might mitigate the symptoms a lot.

It makes sense beds don't feel safe for you given what happened.

It's good to sleep on the floor then if you can actually sleep there until such time thru therapy etc. you can sleep elsewhere. Try to make it comfortable though. You need your sleep.

Can you put your mattress on the floor? Even get rid of the bed for now, perhaps? Sleep is very important. You can bring the bed back later.
