Hello, Tim.

Wow, I've read your initial post and your responses, and it breaks my heart to hear everything that you and your family have been put through so far. It's most definitely alright and acceptable to be feeling the way you are. I knew a family in a similar situation a few year back (perhaps my mother still has contact, but I haven't heard from them in 2 years), and their youngest was also fighting cancer. I know that you are wanting to be strong for your family and particularly for your young son, but you also need to take care of yourself. Reaching out in communities like this is a great place to do that, for sure. I hope you're also continuing to seek support in your church family.

I'll be praying for you and your family.

I'm sad for the pain you are enduring. I'm glad you found this site. You can be angry. You can be sad. You can be bitter. You can cry. You might even be able to find something here that can make you smile. We will support you through it all.

If it is ok, can I pray for your child?

Peace for you and your precious child.
Absolutely. I don't think we would still be around if it weren't for the prayers from so many. Thanks Niki.

Tim, how are you holding up? I have not heard from you in a long time. My heart and prayers go out to you and your family. Big hugs.

Hey gizmo. I kind of went back into hiding there for a few weeks. LOL. That's what my wife calls it anyway.. where I'm there but not there. I did print a lot of these responses and taped them to 3x5 cards to carry with me. So you all were with me, just I wasn't so much with you.

It helped a lot though. After spending so many months thinking I was just alone in this (didn't really know what this was..craziness I guess), it was cool to carry some friends around in my pocket for a while. I don't understand the hiding thing though because I don't really know I'm doing it until I'm not doing it. I just get lost in things like a game on my iphone or anything I can use to "get away." Then people get angry because I'm not engaging like I used to.

The weird thing is I've found recently that I've lost some chunks of time, things I thought were done that weren't done, even some events, but mainly just realizing that several weeks have passed and yet I'm talking about things like they were a few days ago. Like I said, I thought I was going senile, and maybe I am, but I've tried to do a better job of engaging in activities like I used to. I don't want to hear "daddy, you're just not as fun as you used to be" anymore. It's a little odd because I don't really remember being "fun" like that. My wife calls it passion, that I've lost the passion I once had for things. God bless them all for putting up with me through all this.

I'm a little scared though that the passionate Tim won't ever be back. There I go again. I gotta stay out of tomorrow. Tomorrow is one scary place. Like a friend of mine says "if you've got one foot in yesterday and one foot in tomorrow, you're probably just pissin' on today." Sorry for the visual. lol

Thanks Gizmo for checking with me. It's good to be back. Did not realize I posted on here over a month ago, but I'm getting used to hearing that now. :)

It was good to hear from you Tim. I understand the need to get away. You have had so much to deal with. I can understand about the passing of time. Grief will do that to a person. I know my husband is going to die from his disease but I do not know how many years it will be. I freak out when I think about it so I understand your analogy.

I am glad you kept the posts. I am glad you feel supported here. This is a great resource for healing. Take good care of yourself. Be gentle on yourself. Big hugs.

Tim, what you're describing is all normal for what you're going through. People expecting someone to function like always is terribly unjust. It's just as unhelpful as someone telling a flesh wound to stop gushing.

The numbing out, if you're like me, is called 'dissociation' and it's our brain's way of protecting us from being psychologically destroyed. We cope and cope and then our brain shuts down incoming input to give it time to rest.

You might find the threads on dissociation helpful. Here's one -

Sending wishes for comfort and bits of joy breaking through wherever it can.

Tim, my heart breaks for you and your family. I have twin 4 year olds and cannot imagine how difficult this time is for you. I know how traumatic a needle can be for them and cannot imagine how hard it is for you to keep it together for your baby while he goes through very painful treatments. The other combining losses as well are profound. You are not going senile. You are managing and coping the best way you can. I will say a prayer for your dear sweet boy and family.

Hi Tim, welcome to the site. I'm terribly sorry to hear what you're going through.

I just wanted to say that I feel for you. Because while you're on one side of the spectrum I'm on the other. You are the parent protecting, watching, and looking down on your child, while I have been the child hooked up to the machines and looking up at the worried faces of my parents as my body failed me.

I realize the situations are different however I still feel that kindred bond.

As a child who's put my parents through more stress than I ever had the right to I'd just like to say a few things to you that may be of comfort. For one. Thank you for always being there. You may not not feel like you've done anything worthwhile for gratitude, but you being there means a lot. In a world filled with medical professionals, needles, the smell of antiseptic, and the white walls of hospitals there is NOTHING like seeing the face of your father or mother.

The familiarity of a lullaby, a smile, a joke, a laugh, a secret handshake, a sing along or a prized stuffed animal are the things that stand out in my mind. I have an accumulation of months missing in my memory. But even though I can't remember I know for a fact my parents were there.

We may not seem like we notice or appreciate it... be we notice and count on it. Just seeing you and having you nearby is enough. It's all a child could ever ask for. In the end that's all we want. The comfort of your presence.

In my case I couldn't be touched. Physically being touched was an unbearable pain so it was avoided at all costs. I'm not sure how it is with your son, but please if he's capable... hug him whenever you can. That's something I lost out on. Because of years of treatments I've learned to associate any kind of physical touch with pain and terrible memories. When someone goes to shake my hand I have visions of having my hand checked for veins for an IV to be put in. Being hugged puts me on edge, because I expect pain. All I have are memories of medical examinations and needles when it comes to physical contact.

So hug him. Hug him like your life depends on it. Make those beautiful memories for him. Make it so that touch it good, comforting, and something to be craved.

The other day I was in line at the grocery store and heard a loud beep that reminded me of the hospital monitors. The panic that overcame me from a simple cash register beep was unbearable.

I have those kind of triggers as well. The distinctive smell of hospital, certain exam rooms, seeing people in scrubs, and so many more.... it's understandable and I feel for you. It's damn hard to deal with. It gets easier when you learn what your triggers are. When I have a doctors appointment I prepare myself. I know the bright neon examination lights will be over head, I prepare myself for them. That way the trigger doesn't pop up on me unawares and set me off into a frenzy.

Again, I'm so sorry you have to go through with this. Just keep in mind that as much as you want your children healthy and happy, your children want YOU healthy and happy. That worry you feel for them, they feel for you as well. Take care of yourself.
