Implementation And Enforcement Of The New Warning System

This is a stupid question, really. But- how do we know when we have been warned or notified?
You would receive a PC citing a notification about a specific aspect of rules not followed in a post.

The edited message on the bottom is when staff edit posts, without notifications, as minor edits do not obtain any action towards the member. It is only extreme / blatant issues that obtain notifications on a post by post basis.

Notifications achieve one of two things:
  1. The member learns a rule they were not familiar with / remembered, and they change their posting method to comply with forum rules, or
  2. They endup leaving the forum because they don't like conforming to rules.
There is no third option in the equation basically. The system was never implemented with the assertion to distress members. It is written in a very friendly manner. A minority of members still choose option 2, the majority conform and respect this is not their house, thus they do not get to challenge the rules of the house, so they comply with item 1 and use the resource.

Its like me going to a members house. I am in their house, not my own... so their rules apply, not the rules I use in my house. If I started smoking in a non-smokers house, then they would promptly tell me to put it out, or smoke outside, or tell me to leave for being so disrespectful in their home. (I don't smoke... just an example)

We don't allow shoes in our house... so visitors remove their shoes. When we go to another's house, some want the same, no shoes... some don't care, but have other rules. We learn and abide by rules on a case by case basis, otherwise the home owners tell us to get out for disrespecting their rules. Our choice is to comply with their rules, or we leave their house.

How they communicate that to us is up to them... though this system here is done in a well mannered tone... it just took some refinement from to achieve, though it is achieved now.

I really liked the analogy Anthony, about the "taking off your shoes in someone else's house if it's a rule." It really helped me to understand that the rules are the rules-you can choose to ask for help to make sure the rule isn't broken again; or you can leave. We have a choice to follow the rules and stay, or get upset at the notifications and leave.

I'm really glad I found this thread. It helped me a lot and helped to calm me down

If I hadn't already been on sites with little or no rules or moderation, I think it would be a lot harder for me to understand why they are so important.

This site is run really well, and it's easy to take that for granted.

People may think that it would run just fine without rules, but believe me, you wouldn't want to be here if it was total anarchy. Just look around the internet and you can find examples everywhere.

Trust me - A lot more people would be getting their feelings hurt and having misunderstandings without rules than the people who get irked about the enforcement of rules around here.

"Do unto others as we would expect them to do too us." The wheel has already been invented, for the good of humanity; why do so many keep trying to re-invent it for themselves?

I really do empathize with those who get upset, but the moderators can't let those people drag the site down just to avoid hurting feelings. I think the warm fuzzy approach is a wonderful compromise :)

Guess I have lost my sense od himor cuz I am failing to understand why this thread has gotten so ridiculous and out of control. Just my opinion is all. I may not be able to describe what an adult is or how to become one, but I know one thing the stupid stuff going on in this thread IS NOT being an adult.

Sometimes knowing what is not being an adult is a good place to start in awareness. There are so many ways to learn things and acquire new knowledge!

That is a great insight Grama Herc!

Indeed, if you haven't done it yourself you would not be aware of the tremendous amount of hours, blood, sweat, tears, planning, organisation, methodical checking. creating a vision for the future, etc etc that is involved. The whole implementation of guidelines, rules and teaching people how to use them saves so much time.
