Is Anyone Else Really Sensitive To Noise?

Oh, I was walking home from the shops and it just struck me.

I stuck a pair of headphones in sans sound, just to shut the world up a little bit. Then I remembered something.

For anyone who uses in ear headphones, earplugs or anything else that physically obstructs the ear canal. Be warned that there is a risk that you may cause the discharge which normally cleans your ears (earwax) to become impacted. Which while not dangerous, can lead to temporary hearing loss, possible infection (not very likely but possible) and hypersensitivity to the sound frequency blocked out by the earplugs you use.

The hypersensitivity is psychosomatic (in your head) simply from you not being used to hearing those sounds so loud, as when your not using earplugs.

Your ears are supposed to be self-cleaning, the motion of your jaw while talking or chewing, should push the wax out of your ears on it's own.

(I'm sure most everyone knows this but I will say it anyway)
You actually are not ever supposed to put anything inside your ear to clean it. Cotton swabs, fingers, etc, etc. This can cause the earwax to impact, or if you go deep enough, perforation of the tympanic membrane (eardrum).

You can however use baby oil (preferably mineral oil, same oil as baby oil just no perfume) to assist the natural cleaning of the ear. Warm it up to body temperature (no warmer) then pour it in gently, let it sit for moment, then tip your head the other way allowing it to drain. Repeat a couple times a week.

Where I work I have to wear earplugs for some of the areas I work in. I have had my share of impacted ear canals. Not much fun, nor is having to get them flushed out by a doctor.

- Mineral oil can be purchased at any pharmacy. It is sold as a laxative (it will only work as such, if you drink it. Putting it in your ear will not give you the poops.) it's also good for your skin.
- Do not light a Q-tip on fire in order to see inside the ear canal. (this was just for funny)

Just a little FYI for anyone who doesn't know this already.

I too am hyper sensitive to many things. The change in temperature (it actually is painful to me when it gets cold), Smells, hairs and tags in my shirts, bright lights, certain sounds such as fluorescent lights (yes they buzz), power lines (they buzz too), ANY little noise that happens at night! I have to sleep with earplugs now. I wasn't always like this. Funny how being abused makes you hyper aware!

I used to ride motorcycles, and had custom plugs made for me. They attenuate differential HZ levels. Found some great ones in Germany that have three different cones each for different hz range of sound. I hate the orange squishy. Sound deprivation and only your heart beat pounding. I moved into a tiny old cabin on a tiny lake and thought I had found a quiet place. Twice came to check out the place before renting. It was the campers nap time. All summer is not just reasonable kid exuberance, but mega phone yellings and screams as they hype up the kids. Really, 30 kids and a mega phone of ONE, TWO THREE, LOOOOOBBBBYYYYYYY as they jump onto a big plastic pillow from 3 story scaffolding. You can hear it a mile away. I am within 200 feet. Almost back to school time.

Like just now my mom was eating and the sound of the fork hitting the side of the plate was like tor...
Yes. I can no longer have the television on or I get anxiety. The littlest noises agitate me. All my sensories are out of whack. Smells are so strong, eye sight is poor, and the only one who can touch me is my husband and dog. I now wear earplugs and have an appointment to have my eyes checked.

There are times when sounds don't bother me too much. And there are times when there are too many sounds and I can't stand it. One thing I can't seem to stand ever though is the ding ding ding of the bell on the game show The Price Is Right. I literally want to take a hammer to the tv.

I had a neighbor whose grandchild came to visit now and then. Every time the kid was here, he ran back and forth and all around on the floor above me. It drove me batty!
