Is Anyone Else Really Sensitive To Noise?

Absolutely. Yes yes yes. I'm always in hypervigilant mode. It's not so much that sounds bother me, but I seem to pick up on everything, even while asleep, no matter how subtle and that includes detecting smells and movement as well.

My neighbours smoke alarm developed a fault at 12.02am this morning, it has been going off intermittently since, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes for SEVERAL minutes (15 on this session and STILL GOING!!!!!)

I feel like I'm in hell right now.

As Friday mentioned it's the hypervigilance and cataloging all that is going around, but added to that it is following the pattern of what is natural or normal and what is not. For me it are out of pattern noises outside, especially when they are close to the house, and more so when I am going to sleep. Inside, a dripping faucet into a filling bowl or pot is murder, it is out of the normal and triggers all alerts. That said, so are the wild animals that scurry or scamper around the house at late or early hours, as they are being cautious and stealthy, fitting the pattern of a person. When I am full of anxiety or in deep ptsd triggered stages, any loud or unforeseen noise trips my wires and sends me to an alert phase.

Very much so. I have a pair of Bose noise canceling headphones I wear when sound is really bothering me and I can't quite calm myself down. They work pretty well but they don't take out all frequencies. The better your overall symptoms get the more the sound issues wane. Chewing is the thing that sets me over the edge.

Hey thank you. This is a good idea.. I think I'm going to buy some for those times where I can't get myself out of the moment.

sounds totally lead to hypervigilance; birds on the roof at night, continous beeping or screeching of any sort makes me beyond irritable, and too many noises at once

I'm very sensitive to noise a lot of the time, it's like I can hear every little detail, people chewing, digesting, breathing even,

Some sounds are triggers for me, such as someone smacking their lips loud. For some reason, it angers me. If the noise level in the environment around me gets too loud, it causes anxiety. The only loud noise that I like is a box fan. I often keep mine on high, as the white noise is soothing to me, and helps drown out my racing thoughts.

I can be so sensitive to sound and light, my partner once suggested I need to check if I am autistic. That was before I knew about PTSD. So, a very very sturdy YES to the question. It can be quite hellish, but there are ways and tricks to manage it.
