Some people with PTSD, especially if untreated, can become irritated or even violent for no clear reason. If you suspect your patient is having a bad day or seems to be off of her medications, you should reschedule the appointment.

All though the article tended to use the term "some people with PTSD" frequently, this particular "suggestion" bothered me a lot. No clear reason?? I can't imagine that there has been a time when I have any "irritation" that has NOT been linked to something. Patient and trust with my therapist has shown me this.

Then again it's just my opinion.

My thought is that they over emphasized the possible negative symptoms without noting the fact that it is positive that a sufferer would even consider going to PT considering everything else. This makes it sound like medical workers need to approach every PTSD sufferer as if we may be off our meds first and ask later.

I am not going to read this at the moment- seeing posts with 'homicidal', - yikes.
But (hopefully) if it were that 'bad' I'd run (as in away..)
I think most of us are more likely to end up on the other end of the stick, than the other way around.

And I don't take meds- which I guess means I'm permanently off my rocker, lol
If they ask me 'that' I'll ask for Laughing gas. Or Anaesthetic.

I would suspect it helps to 'communicate'.. -(?)
Yikes, all around.

I liked the article, it was short and informative. I can see that really helping if I was a patient to one of those PT's, as I do have anger problems. There are some parts of my body that if touched, I probably will grab a wrist or arm. There are also times when I am noticeably depressed, or having anxiety.

This does remind me I should probably make an appointment to see a PT for my back and neck. To much tension.

The Section on Demeanor, made me feel as if they were talking about people with PTSD like grammar school children due to the fact the needed to breakdown things to the simplest terms BUT the article itself is not bad in my view, very informative.

Well, I'm in Health Care and all I can say to that article upon reading it is "a little bit of knowledge is dangerous". I think it could as equally leave the practioner unsure of how to proceed, and the 'patient' misunderstood, or at least feeling so.

In addition, it is always required and expected (in health and personal care) that one explain 'what' they are about to do before they do it- it is very disconcerting to anyone, otherwise.

I also do not think it is entirely appropriate - based on a lack of personal health information (including the prsence or absence of sexual assaults)- to be able to determine one's 'mental state' within a (routine) 1 hour Physio session.
JMHO

I see nothing bothersome about that, and quite accurate from a professional stand point approaching a patient.

Whilst I have never gone nutty at a professional, I have sat in a hospital and watched a person with PTSD go ape shit at a nurse as he thought he deserved immediate, special attention, because he was anxious waiting around in the hospital.

The med bit irritates me. But this isn't just particular to this article.

Funny, cuz meds are what made me violent. Getting thrown into lockdown? An adverse reaction to antidepressants. Getting the cops threatened on me? An adverse reaction to anti-anxiety meds. Since I've been off such meds, no violent inclinations whatsoever.

I just hate the "take your meds if you're not perfect" attitude (in general). I've encountered this attitude from other survivors as well. There are only four people in my life who have seen the before and after, and know that even tho things are still rough, I'm leaps and bounds better without meds. Sorry, off on a tangent again...but you get my point!
