what is the difference between the two ? I was in with my therapist and I heard them talking about how some people have ptsd from accidents and some have psychiatric damage,

Like the difference between a fractured femur, and physical damage?

One is a very specific diagnosis (must involve broken bone, and that bone must be a femur), and the other is super general "something is wrong, but what & at what level, either isn't known or isn't being shared at this time"?

I still don't get it.
ok,so PTSD is a diagnose.but what is under the umbrella of psychiatric?does all mental illness not fall under the term "psychiatric problems"?

Psychiatric problems and psychiatric damage are different. Problems could be a chemical imbalance, genetic disorder.

Damage would be do to something damaging. I don't suffer from ptsd. However, in the past ibwasbin a very abusive relationship. At the time I had nightmares and startled very easily etc. I don't have those anymore, but I may still have some psych issues as a result.

Personally I don't believe I do, but as a result I don't like to be alone, even though I like to be by myself. My abuser broke into my home and stalked me. I get nervous when I'm home alone, but I like to be left alone in my room etc.

I don't know that this would qualify as damage, I believe it would have to be a little more serious, maybe if I was self medicating or displaying some other self destructive behaviors etc.

No it is psychiatric damage. It's a type of psychiatric damage.

Like Nikes are a type of shoes.

She probably meant it like some get PTSD which is a type of psychiatric damage and others get other types of psychiatric damage.

In the context of talking about the effects of an accident she may have been talking about ptsd vs a brain injury.

how some people have ptsd from accidents and some have psychiatric damage,
This is just a guess, but, based on that statement, it sounds like it's possible they meant "Some people get PTSD from things like being IN an accident" and some have psychiatric damage. I'm not real clear on what they mean by 'psychiatric damage' but maybe it's things like being in a long term, high stress situation like combat, domestic abuse, etc. Which would kind of amount to the difference between 'CPTSD' (which isn't an official diagnosis) and 'regular PTSD'.

If you really want to know what they meant, you should probably ask. Mind reading isn't a real efficient way to get information.

its just when I came home I started to think about it scout86. I am sure someone on here knows ...

The term "psychiatric damage" is not very commonly used here on the forums or by therapists. It is so vague and broad that hardly anyone uses it. It doesn't really provide useful info.

One can have ptsd, a form of psychiatric damage.

One can also develop other mental health problems, other forms of psychiatric damage after an accident with different symptoms.

There are too many types of mental health disorders to list all the differences between ptsd and other forms of psychiatric damage that can happen.

This is what I get when I look up psychiatric damage.

Nervous shock in English law - Wikipedia

Perhaps she is talking about nervous shock inflicted due to the actions of others.....

To amount in law to "nervous shock", the psychiatric damage suffered by the claimant must extend beyond grief or emotional distress to a recognised mental illness, such as anxiety neurosis or reactive depression.

It seems however, that the phrase psychiatric damage is used in this context as an umbrella term .... so as Scout suggests I would ask specifically what she means by psychiatric damage. What her definition of that in your case would mean.

I would think that PTSD falls under the psychiatric damage umbrella.
