naw I wanted to do the Iowa or New Jersey but they decommed both of them too fast after uncle Ronnie got out of office.. The Guam was the typical LPH but oh so badly needed a face lift... She was our old lady tho... I loved her like you don't know... She was built like 5osomething in response to Korea... she was involved in the Inchon landing etc... (McArthur was a dick but that was a work of art)
I remember one of the aid stations I manned at GQ... it had a hole about 2 feet wide and 1 feet thick where a tug rammed us a little too hard in Roosevelt Roads... lol that was comforting knowing our ship was not much thicker than the hood of my car as far as armor....
On a side note it was sooooo relaxing hanging out on that after deck you see in the pic with the good view.... right above the word Guam...
Also on coming aboard the first time it was quickly pointed out we had a radar signature unlike any ship on the waters... it was experimental in the 60s and they left it.. therefore the Soviet's knew where we were 24/7... that is reassuring...
LOL!!!!! omg that is classic! I was gonna comment they were dead the minute they cut the engines and drifted in but lol... that was just plain funny....
A big fail to the Recon that landed them there or the Naval Gunfire Support that pounded it into mire. Christ tidal mud flats. Stink to high heaven as well. Big fun.
OK as long as we're showing ship porn. My first vessel. Ain't she sexy. I shave with her now. Dead Link Removed
If you turn off the lights she'll glow (Bikini Island BAKER test target fleet). If you breath too hard she'll start on fire. Started on fire every time we left the dock. I fought 8 fires, 2 floodings and 1 weapons accident on this thing (kind of dropped a Torpedo on top of a submarine.)
NAVY. "You can try to kill us, but we might beat you to it." They should hire me for recruiting slogans.
lol Wagon!!! your image didn't come through... what ship was she? and I can so see that as a recruiting slogan... as much as I loved her, the Guam had her issues too...
Just a side note when I came onboard the Austin the LPO of H division gave me a tour of the ship.. I was a young HM3 and was in awe of a vessel of war.. Anyway we were in the hold and we came across stacks of boxes of Kotex pads... I asked him why those? He told me they were for the Tiger cruises when the wives and mothers wold hitch a ride from NC to Charleston SC ... they had them in case they were on their period... I shrugged and accepted it..
Finally he laughed and looked at me... he asked me what Kotex are good for... before I had time to answer he told me "what soaks up blood better??? Ahhhh... lol... My first lesson as a young corpsman...
Ahhh. I have an ugly filter on my PC. Let me try again.
This one seems to be photo shopped. Allot more rust on the same original picture. Damn Navy ring knockers. This baby was so old she was riveted together. We had to call people out of retirement to dry dock. AND for you construction and engineer type junkies, prototype electric cranes. And one of the first diesel/electric propulsion plants. Why? I have no idea. But the switchboard was akin to watching a magic show when it all went wrong.
man I havent seen one of those in 100 yrs!!!! is it an AK? and lol ya thats how I felt on the Austin.. commissioned 50 something... funny thing is the Guam was sink-ex'd and the Austin is still in Active service...
The LCAC can climb a 5 ft wall while going 30mph. It opened us from using higgins boats and laav's (about 4% of the wolds beaches and subject to tidal restrictions as well) to over 80% of the worlds beaches with no tidal restrictions. The LCAC can aslo travel inland and the rubber apron on them is armored. Due to high speed they are tipically unarmed but I have seen one that was test armored. The deck had an alum and steel box with 4 turrents attached 2 had stingers and two turrents had the bushmaster 25mm cannon that they run in the 8 wheeled tank I cant remember the name of.
Part of my job in amphib intel warfare is to know the capability or both sides in conflict and tactics that both sides use in battle. We had packages made up for conflict all over the world the US vs you name it. Every two years the plans had to be updated and reapproved for use. Thank God I went into Humit after the first 5 months of the job. I would have slashed my wrists doing those reports for any length of time. But that LCAC...and the still in development LAAAV.... I dont know if they are still going to make the high speed LAAAV but they used to claim 40mph in the water for 12 Marines and crew...thats like lightning compared to the LAAV. Not to mention the LAAV takes on 2-3 ft of water while in the sea....that sure was scary the first time I rode in one. Makes a helo seem downright safe! And the Osprey? The BOMB! 500mph like a plane and on a dime it can transit to a hover?! Ohhhh man! The toys the Marines have now are the shit! The only thing the Marines need is to get a bunch of warthog a-20's for close air support and get them to take off a carrier deck. Ohhh....drool factor 4 there....
