North Carolina judge sentences veteran with PTSD to night behind bars - and then goes to jail with him

The judge sentenced the 41 year old vet for relapsing and drinking again, and then he went and spent the entire time in jail with him.

From the article:

“[Judge] Olivera told the Observer he was reminded of a story he once read:

'It talked about a soldier with PTSD in a hole. A family member, a therapist and a friend all throw down a rope to help the veteran suffering. Finally, a fellow veteran climbs into the hole with him.

The soldier suffering with PTSD asks, ‘Why are you down here?’ The fellow veteran replied, ‘I am here to climb out with you.’”

I love this story, I wish more people who hand out the law understood what we deal with. I talked to my T about cops being trained on how to help people with PTSD when they are having an anxiety attack. To calm them down instead of escalate the situation. Whether during a routine stop or called to a scene.

She told me they gave a free class to train the cops in the country where she works. FREE, guess how many cope showed up? ZERO, NONE!! And that's why there's still so many misunderstandings when a cop is called or a person with PTSD is pulled over, because they have no idea what they are doing, or how to calm the person down. They end up escalating the situation. It's sad and ridiculous that they wouldn't give a little of their time to gain some knowledge and understanding to be able to better help out a huge group of people. :(:shifty:
