Kids And Electronics

Know what you mean. Our place can get pretty loud, and it still makes me really jumpy, even when it's them just enjoying themselves. I don't know the answer, but I know that I have regretted taking the easy way out and allowing too much TV or video games. It'll pay off later on, but for now - maybe you could try headphones to listen to something more soothing, of your choice? You are being a great mother!

I keep reminding myself that parenting is a solid 20 year commitment and then I will be independent again. I survived more than 20 years of awful before they were born. Parenting isn't awful but it is incredibly high stress. I can live with another 15 years of high stress in hopeful payment towards people who will want to know me in 30, 40, 50 years. It's a good trade, even.

Less electronics is always better. It's hard to deal with the noise and all, but it's always better in the long run, for everyone. But really, I'm a hypocrite here... I let my kids get away with way too much time with their electronics, because it's easier. I think I'm going to take your example and try to do better this year, despite the noise and the protests. ;)

Please go with your heart! ;)

My 10 year old cousin frustrated me this Christmas by asking her parents for a new ipod touch: she has an ipod touch 4 (but would not let me help her fix it, told me she's tried everything, but had no clue what I meant by saying I would clear the memory), an iPad that as a hand-me-down, a Wii, a laptop hand-me-down, a Nintendo DS hand-me-down, and a Mac computer (for the family, but she uses it most).

I really hope she got clothes instead.

My daughter is 9 and has way more electronics than she needs...half of them are rarely used. iPad, laptop, iPod touch, Nintendo 3DS, Wii, Xbox. Most of these are rarely touched. She uses her iPad and laptop on a daily basis because she uses them mostly for school/education, although she does also use them for entertainment purposes. If she wants to play video games, they are restricted to weekends only. I bought her a new laptop about two years ago and lately she has been working very hard to persuade me to buy her a new chromebook to replace it. There's always something newer, smaller, faster that kids think they need.
