A Melbourne mother almost lost her baby after falling seriously ill with salmonella poisoning in the wake of a baby shower at the prestigious Langham hotel.

The day after eating high tea at the five star hotel, the 29-year-old was taken to hospital where doctors delivered her baby five weeks premature, according to the Herald Sun.

The baby suffered breathing problems was put on oxygen, as is common with premature births.

His mother has been unable to touch him while she remained ill.

Of the 44 people affected, 15 had salmonella. Six were treated in hospital and four admitted overnight.

Wanna know what's even worse... I've been vax'd against salmonella. When I was working in Latin America one of the clinics tapped me. We were delivering a shipment of meds & the British doc came out and jabbed each of us. I had no idea it wasn't a common vaccine until I went to school (stateside) and took a microbiology class from one of the scientists who engineered it (Farrand). None of the drug companies up here that he & his research team contacted would pick it up to run through the FDA trials... Because it's not a 1st world problem. No profit in it. So they released it, open source style, down south. The vax is available in several 3rd world countries, now, but the downside of going to school also means I'm a little leery of their production facilities. Oh well. Fait accompli. Upside is whatever else was in the vax, the damn thing works. I've been directly exposed more than a few times, and no yellow foam! (TMI Friday, tmi, I know.) So the vaccine exists. But very few people will ever have the opportunity to get it.
