Relationship Late Night Text

So I got a late night text from him last night. He only asked if I was awake. I only answered "yes". He never said anything else.

He's been moderately MIA, but he was trying to be supportive of me recently during a medical issue. He's been in a bad place since a family member of his fell ill. So, after my situation was resolved I hadn't heard from him. Until last night. I don't know if he was just wondering if I was out or if he was reaching out. When we first reconnected he would text like that a lot, asking if I was home yet or if I was going out etc. But this time I'm more fearful that he's in a bad place. He didn't say anymore, so I didn't either. Now I'm at a loss as to whether I should reach out or let him be.

Yes, reach out. He already reached out to you, so it can't hurt.

I did respond around 8am, I just reminded him I'm here. About an hour later he said he just wanted to know how I'm feeling but he fell asleep. This was at 1am. He also said he's away for the weekend at a program he volunteers at. It's seems unlikely he'd be in a really bad place at that moment. I find this to be somewhat unusual.

Talk to them when they reach out, it's a big deal for people to reach out and try, even it is just some sort of small back and forth, it shows you're still there.
