I just had a light bulb go off last night and thought I would share...

I have this list of songs I can't sing/play on guitar because I'll break down crying and can't finish the song. I forgot all about it until one of the songs came on during a wedding last night. I thought - wait a minute - I can cry after all... (I thought I couldn't)

(I didn't cry at the wedding, but hearing the song reminded me that I can't play it)

So perhaps I should explore this, and try to play one of these songs each day or once a week or something and see if it helps me get back into contact with my grief - hopefully in a good way.

Just in case you're curious - 2 of the songs are - "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong, and "Memories of East Texas" by Michelle Shocked. There are a bunch of others, but I've blocked them out of my memory for the moment, so unless I accidentally try to play them, or hear them somewhere, they are a mystery for now...

Anyone else have unusual ways of tapping into grief? Any opinions on whether this means anything? Any songs that make you cry? Do you purposely watch movies and things to be able to cry? (Movies don't do it for me - just music)

Please answer if you can - I'm dying to hear about this...

Hm, interesting. Well, there are certain songs by certain artists that definitely invoke an emotional response from me when I listen to them. I wouldn't say they make me cry (though it's possible depending on how low I'm feeling emotionally), but there is a somber tone to them. Mainly Backstreet Boys and Avril Lavigne which is what I grew up listening to as a child...

Then in high school I was depressed a lot and everyday seemed to be like Sisyphus. I listened to a lot of Modest Mouse in that period and so a few songs can hit me pretty deep.

Honestly I think you should explore it. It's a hell of a lot better than running away from it. Good luck Erica.
