woohoo!! Bike ride finally. 25-30k but that's based on an estimate as I didn't bother bringing my garmin - so based on google maps, it's 27k but the route I took isn't mapped so I can give up the additional few kms.

For you cyclists, what would be considered a good daily training run re distance, cadence for cross-training. I want the cycling to support my running and not burn out. Any training tips?

But really loving the cycling. All one day of it so far lol.

@City Slicker That's actually a question that's better answered by asking what your current fitness is and goals are. Additionally what kind of bike do you usually ride, distances are you comfortable with and at what speed? Do you ride clipped in or on platforms?

Generally If you are just cross training on a flat bar bike or a mountain bike what you did today is plenty to keep the body moving and give you a nice work out.
As far as cadence, when I'm working the flats I try to keep my gear ratio such that I can do about 90-100 cadence and keep the legs turning over, as I hit the hills I try to keep that cadence and not let it drop below 80 too much. Depends on the hills.. sometimes you can't help it.

I am a HUGE fan of cycling (can ya tell?)

Also a faster cadence on the bike will translate over to running. Different muscle groups but still...

Thanks @desiderata310 - your fan-ness of cycling is making me wanna get back on and out (it's 12:30am here lol).
Yes I definitely can tell you are a huge cycling fan!

I am on platforms. It's an older Kona Fire Mountain bike but equipped with 700's slick street tires and flat bars. It's a bit heavier than a road bike but no shocks or discs so no additional weight.

Nice saddle too and the people that had it before me used it as a courier bike. I feel it's solid enough that I won't break it with occasional side trips off the beaten path and I feel secure on the slightly larger wheels too. Mostly I am riding paved paths and a little bit of dirt hills thrown in. My ride today was nicely paved trails but I did go 'off-roading albeit briefly.

It would be great to have the bike translate into running as lately I seem to have hit a plateau re speed in my running. I am an 'average' speed runner - between 9-10:30 minutes per mile on a marathon. Faster with 10k and half marathons but I am not really able to break through to achieve anything faster no matter how I train.

That's ok with me but if the bike were to help improve balance, strategic cadence, endurance etc I can see becoming more consistent with my running output too.

Thanks @desiderata310 - I really appreciate your feedback.

Owwww....tender sit bones today. But I managed a long ride at lunch - a bit less distance than yesterday only I tried hills more this time. I managed to keep a fairly consistent cadence of 90-ish most of the way but dropped significantly on the hills (about 70-80) but I imagine that gets better with time and personal style.

I am also learning the gears and ratios on this bike - almost scared the crap out of myself when I cross-chained (which is what a passing cyclist yelled politely to me when he heard the grinding noise and saw the that 'wtf' look on my face). Having a blast with this bike.

I did a little walking, some cleaning and went to the grocery store and bought groceries. That may not seem like much, but everything I do is a real effort for me, so I consider it exercise that I was not getting before.

Not happy... last run was Tuesday, come down with the flu Tuesday night, been crook as the last few days. This sucks... I hate not running every couple of days.
