@City Slicker If you're really going to get into this (and it sounds like you've really been enjoying it) you might want to consider purchasing a pair of cycling shorts. They have a special chamois which protects all the important bits and helps keep your sitz bones from aching too much. You don't even have to go all spandex! You can purchase mountain biking shorts with chamois in them that just look like regular shorts from the outside. Truly: the "queen" will thank you for it- you really want to keep her happy.Oh... and no underwear with chamois-important side note.

Don't fret too much about your cadence dropping into the 70's and 80's. Considering the bike, your available gear ratio, and the size of the hill in question, this may be unavoidable.

Also: I was told try farklets in your running training. I'll let you know if they make a difference in a few months.

@City Slicker : Congrats! ...hope you will like it even more time after time. And I agress with @desiderata310 . Right clothes are really important for longer tours. I bought myself a new MTB last year and I also have to "learn" it somehow new.

No real training yesterday. Masking off and prime coating the rooms in our new flat. Took about seven hours...but we'll be able to paper the rooms next time.

Thanks @desiderata310 and @Anrish

I have been replacing some of my running with cycling and I am loving it. Thanks @desiderata310 re the cadence. I relaxed and put that on the back burner while I learn to manage the gear ratios and learn a lot more about them.

I went to the local sport shop here that is well stocked and spoke with them about cycle shorts. I saw some nice ones but none with the nice looking pattern in chamois. In the meantime, I got a pair of the plain black padded ones that were onsale until I can spring for the others and I am wearing them under my normal shorts for now.

I also have sun sleeves that I use for running and they help with not having to slather on sun screen and it's funny but they seem to keep my arms cooler which I like.

I have increased my distance to 50k during the later evenings when I can't sleep - we have a trail that covers almost the entire distance without having to go into traffic. Now I understand why one is supposed to have a light - not for you to see the trail in front of you but for others to see you coming.

Do you folks have trouble seeing in the real darkness? What do you use? I have a good light but I don't find that I can really see everything comfortably. Is that normal?

Thank you so much for your encouragement.

Oh forgot @desiderata310 - I have been doing fartleks for a few years now and they really do work. I have a measured distance from tree to tree and then every so many metres I throw in a fartlek and hit my anerobic threshold. Gradually I saw an increase in my times until recently.

I suspect I might just be overtraining and not eating enough so this is one of my goals in cycling too - to use a different part of the brain and body to work different muscles or work muscles differently.

Ah men for the chamois for bike riding. We both have bike shorts... that little chamois is the difference between being very sore the next day and not being sore. The gel seat is also worth it if riding long distances / spending a lot of time on a bike. Those two combined... winning combination for your bits.

Just getting to part of coughing all the crap off of my chest... so still no exercise. Argh!!!!
