Mia - A New Addition To Our Family

Australia have better laws in place to cut down on accidental litters?
A lot of professional breeders are either selling the puppies desexed or offering a refund of a certain value of cash when you have the dog de-sexed. Councils give you a registration discount for de-sexed dogs.

Amongst the groups I've joined, lots are strong advocates for ensuring your dog is not from a puppy farm and checking out adoption. http://kb.rspca.org.au/RSPCA-Australia-animals-charter_316.html

What does Lily think of Mia so far
They have not met. Lily is in for a surprise as she has been the centre of attention.

They are more like designer breeds if you will. More peoe need to adopt, save a life, and know that puppies in a store come from horrible puppy mills. The one we shut down and rescued all dogs from was going to a well know pet store.
While I don't want this thread to go off topic, in Australia if you are buying from a reputable breeder you are ensuring you aren't supporting puppy mills. Some of our well know pet stores actually provide an outlet for puppy mills to sell their puppies hence why we won't buy from a store which is cheaper. So, what you've said is a double edged sword from where I come from and to adopt you would go to the RSPCA or known organisation, not a store.

Our puppy has been DNA tested for 30+ genetic diseases and like Lily, will be desexed.

I wasnt stating that you were a bad breeder at all, actually I stated the opposite twice in my reply but my reply to @Lucycat who was looking for a dog I was stating my OPINION that in ANY country, adopting and saving a life is better than buying from a breeder, in MY opinion and twice stated that I wasnt stating anything bad about the origional post, you, and that i was sure you were a nice person who breeds for the health of your breed; go re-read my reply please. My opinion is, no matter your country, saving the life of an animal that may get put down is much better than buying one. Now im sure that like everyone else here, as long as im not putting anyone down, which i did not, that im entitled to my opinion.

I wasnt stating that you were a bad breeder at all,
Never thought you were and I'm not a breeder.

I was trying to agree with you and while the type of puppy we want is not available for adoption, we ensured we did not buy from a puppy farm. We chose a dog that fits in best with what we can provide in an apartment. No point adopting a great dane if we have no yard and a small apartment space only as that would be cruel to the dog. We also needed a low allergy dog (hence the poodle) and non shedding. Both me and my staff, who work from my home office, suffer from allergies. I support your cause @lostforgottensoul - but it may not be the practical option for everyone every time.

I was trying to agree with you and while the type of pup...

Only Great Danes are avail for adoption? I have an 80 lb pitbull in an 850 sq ft apartment and he's fine due to being ran. Small dogs are also avail for adoption. And i wasnt judging you for buying from a breeder though I did miss read the orginal post. All i was saying is there are all sizes, all breeds and mixed breeds, poodles and mixes of poodles that need homes in all countries therefore i was just expressing, to someone else that stated they were looking for a dog, my opinion that i, myself, would rather not have a dog unless or until i could rescue it and advised to them to consider adopting. Thats all.

Yes, that's the word I was looking for above - registered! In Tater's area of the UK dogs must be registered, as well. Not so much here. I've lived in 3 Southern states and that has never been a requirement. We are over run with strays, possibly in part because there are no incentives like that...no registration, therefore, no price break for having them spayed or neutered. However, I do believe states in New England are more on the ball with this and therefore don't have the same staggering over population problems we have. Consequently, many of the humane society shelters down here truck dogs and cats up North for adoption.

I have heard of some breeders here requiring that their puppies not be used for breeding, but that's simply to cut down on competition, and not altruism.

Sounds like things are handled much better in Australia, indeed. Gives me hope that one day we will only have responsible, caring breeders and pet owners. That would get us so much closer to ending the homeless pet problem.

Thanks for educating me. I really do find it interesting. :)

Yes, the US needs to get a handle on this WAY overpopulation we have but I know there are dogs in shelters in every country. I was just advising for someone else looking for a pup as cute as that to look to adopt first. Not sure why this turned into almost what i feel was a fight, maybe im taking it wrong as i often do, but my reply wasnt to the orginal poster but to someone else looking for a dog and it was just a suggestion and an opinion and wasnt judging anyone for anything

I can see that you are extremely passionate on this subject. That is to be commended! It is a great stance to take and happens to be one that is very close to my heart, too. You are absolutely entitled to your opinion and to advocate adoption. I applaud you and hope that you will encourage others to adopt.

We are at a small disadvantage communicating in writing, sometimes an unfamiliar turn of phrase or the lack of tone, gestures, expressions, etc. can cause meanings to become jumbled. But I don't feel like you were attacked or that it turned into a fight...there's just some miscommunication happening here. Nicolette made a decision based on her own circumstances, which we really know nothing about. Sounds like she had considered possible adoption, but found that this was the better way for her to go. I understand how that would seem to be perpetuating the population problem, but perhaps she helps in other ways, or will in the future. And being that is is a different country, there are different rules and laws that we aren't classed in.

Same with Lucycat, maybe (if she wan't already so inclined) she will adopt since you put a bug in her ear. I second that! Fingers crossed.

I agree with you, 100% but maybe it's time to take a break from this thread and you can come back later, if you wish. No one is fussing at you or judging you and you haven't come across badly either. Just let sleeping dogs lie for a bit....if I dare to say that. LOL:hug:

I miss read the orginal post to begin with, I thought she was posting the mother dog of the puppies she bred so that was my fault plus im at working trying to talk and type and majorly multi task. I felt the first reply was a bit attacking but it was based on a miss understanding anyway.

And yes, adopting pets, animal reacue as well as talking with abused children are passions of mine and a bug in one's ear was my only intent.

Taking that break as you advised. Thank you! Not sure how to do the hug emogy (however you spell that) but hugs to you!
