Other Micro Agressions about Nationality

Not quite sure where this goes.

Essentially -- I am a foreigner. Living as an American abroad. First off, I want to acknowledge that I am white, and that brings so much privilege with it. But I am also queer and non-binary, although I probably pass a straight and cis- to most people. But, and this is a huge BUT, there have been numerous microagressions at work lately, related to my ethnicity and my home country, and I am just tired of them.

And when does it affords making an intervention? Or getting in touch with HR or the Equity office?

I'm lucky because I've spent most my life as the privileged class. I'm learning so much and becoming a better person from this experience. But when does one just accept it and when does one intervene? Where is that line?

That line is so hard.
I haven't ever done it, when perhaps I should.

I suppose the things to weigh up are:
Do you feel able to challenge the person/people in the moment? (Either by saying how you feel in response to what they said, or asking them not to say those things, or whatever works)
Do you feel able to raise it with your manager?


If you are going to HR, I would start recording all the things/dates/times/who else was there and heard. So that you have a running record.

At the end of the day, you:re experiencing something that is discriminatory and it's hard on you. That shouldn't happen.


Right now for me, I have decided I need to leave my job rather than going to HR as I can't see that HR will do anything to make it better, and it might make it worse for me. But that's me and this situation.
 
Maybe I am just cynical but going to hr could come back on you even though it isn’t supposed to. You will be marked as a problem employee. It is a good idea to keep notes of events as they occur and of course preserve all texts and emails. I am sorry you are going through this, there are a lot of A holes out there.
