Anyone have some suggestions on how to get relief from serious migraines? I was taking imitrex but it has this nasty side-effect where you feel like you're having a heart attack! I freaked everybody out at work the other day because I was doubled over with chest pain it was embarrassing. The migraines are now refractory to imitrex so I stopped taking it. I have now had a migraine for 3 days. I am trying to find a specialist and will call one of the specialty centers in Philadelphia tomorrow. The health care where I live in rural PA isn't very good, I've tried them, and it's not working. So anyway....if anyone has some useful tinctures, potions, notions, or whatever please do tell.

Jesse, I feel for you. I suffer migraines too. The only thing I can do is lie down with an ice pack on my head. The ice seems to dull the pain until it runs it's course. So sorry you are suffering....I really do know how it feels. Try the ice...can't hurt. Feel better! ((( gentle hug )))

The only time I ever had migraines was after a hysterectomy when I was taking too much estrogen. I figured it out and lowered my dosage. They are awful. I have other health issues and I have noticed that trying to eat foods without Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) in them helps with most of my unexplained pains.

yep... ice on forehead or sometimes behind my neck. A friend of mine used to put a baseball hat on really tight for a while then release it?? She swore by it. I think it was just so tight that then when she took it off the blood flow rushed in and felt better for a while. I usually get the auras first and that's my cue to take something to head off pain, but last one, I did that and had another aura in an hour AND pain. They can be tough to pinpoint!!

Good luck on finding help! It is often hormonal, diet or environment that triggers it for many who suffer them. If you get them frequently keep a journal of what you ate beforehand or what you were doing or what part of your cycle you are in. That will help someone help you.

Oh. This could get long, but not out of self-importance but because I've been taken to the ER with my head in a pillow more times than anyone could count, I finally went to a neurologist, who has me on a preventative, which has been helpful. Topamax! 100 mgs a day, and although it was a hellish few days while getting myself adjusted to it, after that there have been zero side effects. You drop 10 pounds for some reason also, so who hates that? She also has me taking magnesium daily. I find that when my weight is down, this is helpful, as is staying on the migraine diet relgiously-you can Google this. I used to find that taking the herb Feverfew was helpful as a preventative, and also ginger but since the migraines have amped up these lost their oomph somewhat.

Try Treximet? It's the 'new' Imitrex. It's possible also they have you taking too much. I cut mine in half, and have the migraines react regardless. The balance I've found is taking Butabitol (sp?) when I feel something kicking in, and something with codiene if your doc allows it. If that doesn't stop things, take the 'Imitrex' ( there's another of the same type called Maxalt, which might work better for you? Ask your doc. ) plus whatever narcotic your doc will allow. They really, really should, although I understand some do not on the grounds that as soon as one mentions pain your an addict. My neuro likes to just knock the thing out of me before it does end up in the ER, and absolutely knows I'm not abusing anything. The good ones just wish you not to have a migraine. I've also had Lorazapam work for possibly getting to a migraine before it becomes neccessary to resort to the Imitrex type meds.

Anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen and Aleve do not help and will make it worse, actually, so stay away from these. The initial migraine impulse is one where their action is contraindicated, that's all.

I'm sorry to be all over the place with this, but boy, this has been something which has seriously impaired my life horribly. I do wish to add also, to please stay really, really hydrated also. Someone with more knowledge than me of the dynamics at work can tell you why, but this also was recommended to me as a preventative, and works.

If you can get to a good neuro at some point, it's helpful but I have to say my primary care doc fills in beautifully between appointments. They might together also be able to help track down the genesis of the condition. Mine appears to be a shredded cervical disc and some stenosis which has degenerated over the past decades.

Good luck with this, seriously. I hope you're able to find some relief from some source. Do take care, I feel for you!

Thanks so much for the input everybody. I will take your advice seriously anything to help. I had two vertebrae fused in my neck 5 years ago as a result of herniated disks. Sometimes I wonder if that may have something to do with it. I stay away from OTC stuff like ibuprofen, etc because it just doesn't work so no point in taking it. I will try the icepack and ask Dr. about the meds mentioned above. One of my friends suggested I get tested for a gluten intolerance which isn't a bad idea either. Anyway thanks a lot and will let you know what happens.

Hi again-

I'll bet you saw I replied and thought 'OH NO!!!!', NOT another long winded, badly structured rant from THAT person! :) I feel for you- but saw your fused vertabra info so it's kind of your fault for giving me that kind of information to run with. :)

I'll try to be brief? The thing is, is I never put the 2 of them together until not all that long ago. I had this damage- no biggie albeit painful, and also had this stupid migraine thing, same thing. It wasn't until I went for a 2nd opinion ( prompted my my husband who didn't think it quite normal to exist in this amount of, er-discomfort- daily) that the new doc sort of wisely squinted at the MRI, nodded and said 'OH yes, that would do it!'. WHAT????? This forum has strict rules on swearing so will self-regulate but the car on the way home was quite, quite foggy with a vile blue haze in the air, to be sure! I'd never been told that before, or at least so definitively.

It's just worth a 2nd opinion, that's all. I do hope you find an answer, because some of the migraine conditions do not have one, I know. Mine might be fixable ( Good God in Heaven I hope so), so am wishing this for you. :)
