I joined the forum to learn how to parent our two children more compassionately. We see a therapist weekly and have not turned to medication yet, as we are still in the evaluation stage as to everything these kids may have (RAD, ODD, and possibly FAS). Would love any suggestions. Currently have questions on IEPs and behavior issues, Special Education Classrooms and restraining holds, and dealing with the school district.

Hi Twyger,
I can't really speak to your questions, but I can say that it's nice to see you're reaching out for resources to help your children. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome Twger ! If you are talking about IEP I assume your children are at school. do you feel that you are getting the support you need from the school and the wider school system?

Hi Twyger

This is a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder forum mainly for adults. But there are a few members, I think, who maybe able to help with the parenting side where children suffer.

You may find more help and advice for the other issues your children have by Goggling all of the above, specifically for "Children With ......." and going from there.

Hope you find the advice and support you need soon.

Have heard about kids adopted from other countries developing terrible PTSD. 20/20 did a story on it . Very touching. And very hard. Keep looking for resources!

Thank you for the great advice everyone!

Yes, one is in 6th grade and one is in 2nd grade, and no, the school/school system have not been supportive. We have a Therapist that specializes in children - she is helping each child and helping to teach us how to parent for these specific needs. Recently we found a local Advocate to help us with the school district and attend the IEP meetings. For once, with the advocate, we felt as if we were on a more level playing field with the district.

The school district wants to put the youngest in a special Behavioral Classroom - however, the classroom uses restraint holds and a padded room (no door). They say these holds and the aversion room will be used in an emergency only - but I am so worried that any use will add to his PTSD.

I will also look into finding a forum for Children with PTSD.
