My World Is Dying And I Am A Livid Floridian

Obviously we can't "trust" BP to handle this disaster, but unfortunately we are a bit at their mercy. Our government does not have all of the technology, equipment and expertise necessary to remedy the situation. I say the government needs to make sure BP and their execs are held accountable...financially and criminally. But at the moment the focus needs to be on stopping the oil, saving as many animals as possible, preventing the oil from invading anymore delicate ecosystems than it already has, and cleaning up this enormous mess. Everyone needs to work together, there will be plenty of time for pointing fingers later. Our government was stupid for allowing deep water offshore drilling in the first place. BP, along with other big oil companies, is just a greedy, money-hungry corporation who has lied to our government and people about the safety measures in place to prevent such a disaster.

What I don't understand is that our federal government has made resources available to our local and state governments that they are not using. We can't rely on BP to do everything because it's obvious that they aren't stepping up to the plate. We may be at their mercy for some things but let's get off our arses and do what we are capable of doing. The federal government authorized activation of National Guard troops. Why haven't state governments utilized this resource? They could have been helping with building sandbars and barriers to prevent some of this oil from reaching our precious wetlands, marshes and beaches.

BP screwed up the Exxon cleanup and yet the Am government had no problem letting them screw this up as well. BP as a company should have been dissolved after the Exxon disaster. It's also a pisser that the Canadian government is only NOW sending its boom down there! WTH?!?

We are all guilty for buying all these fossil fuel products - computers, cars, plastic toys... if we all stick together and demand alternative oils like corn, things will change. I am just as guilty as BP for even owning any of these plastic poisons - yet for many, it's a choice between making a living and starving.

The lives of both marine/human beings in the Gulf states have been destroyed.

This spill is going to go around Florida, up the east coast, and all the way to Europe, so it's just beginning.

Hang onto that rage, Herc! Do something with it! Write a bazillion letters to your government officials and the president! Tell them No More offshore drilling... We are not at their mercy, we are the consumers that buy their junk and we can refuse to shell out our pennies! Boycott companies that do offshore drilling!

The US government couldn't do anything by themselves that BP aren't, if not already achieving more off, under such circumstances. People can play the blame game all day, but that isn't going to fix the issue.

It's about accountability and preventive measures, so why is the Am gov't letting BP to continually lay out boom improperly? Why isn't the Am gov't letting other countries step in? Where is the National Guard? It isn't about blame, it's about getting rid of the blind patriotism that got us here in the first place - to get the gov't and these profit driven companies to take responsibility right now.

Blame?

No, it's about enraged people demanding that the government hold this company accountable. It's about getting the gov't to step up to the plate Right Now (the American people are still waiting).

You go down to Louisiana or Florida, Anthony, and talk to those involved, and you will see that the gov't is still slacking off. They can't fix what they've done, but they sure can prevent the destruction of Florida - if they could be bothered.

If BP would just take the outragious amount of $$$$$$ they are spending to put the face of their CEO on television to say how sorry he is, they could get more accomplished.

Plain and simple, BP does not want to PLUG the hole. It would screw up their access to the oil left down there. But IMHO, if they don't do something soon--there will not be any oil left in the dam hole, it will all be in the gulf, in the marches and on the beaches.

OMG ! ! ! Our country now has Seafood Sniffers. Their job is to sniff seafood and check for any signs of oil. OMG!!!!!!!! We are on day 50. DAY 50. You can't tell me this can't be fixed.

I just want to slap someone and scream at them to fix the dam hole.

it is taking way too long, i too was born and raise a FL girl on the Atlantic side. It is a shame, so many beautiful animals, water, beaches and the lifestyles it is going to ruin. They don't make beaches and oceanfront anymore. Honestly from the food perspective a majority of our seafood is raised now anyways only a small percent is wild caught. Dolphins, sea turtles, birds, sharks, fish they are all dying because of oil.....makes me sick.

To put it in terms BP might understand, Florida is going to die if you kill its beaches and beautiful water. People will stop visiting, businesses will close, people will lose their jobs and coastal towns will become ghost towns. We may very well witness the end of FL as a vacation spot and it may very well cause another depression.

"Honestly from the food perspective a majority of our seafood is raised now anyways only a small percent is wild caught."

I don't know the statistics, perhaps that is true if you look on a national scale. Regardless, I doubt that is of little consolation to the people who do support their families through fishing, shrimping, etc. For them it is not just a job. Their families have been doing it for generations and they are losing not just their livelihood but a way of life.

Monarch,

Finally, some one "GETS IT" This is a true national disaster. Not just some ltiny little local fishing viillage full of hicks.

I bet something dramatic will be done when the oily goo hits the pristeen coast of Mexico. They won't stand for their tourist business to go down. Mississippi has a coast line devoted to casinos---that will be gone.

The sad part right now is the hardest hit by this crap is the areas destroyed by hurricane Katrina. How many times can this area rebuild before they collapse.???

GEE WIZ ! !

Just imagine, the oil company lied to us!!!!!! Seems they "under estimated" the amount of crap spewing into the gulf. Double it. OMG!!! They say it is twice what we thought! DOUBLE ? ?

And that mysterious "plume" that doesn't exist?????????? They found it. Been watching the news reports and experts regarding this. New fact in. The only way to "fix' THE WETLANDS is to burn them. BURN THEM ? ? Yep, burn they down. But of course, that only gets rid of the oil, not the toxic chemicals that has leached out of the oil into the water.

This is just way to sad. :(

Herc,

If you followed environmental organizations and their news, you'd already know this. Divers dove into the dispersed plume weeks ago, showing what it was like to be underwater in that mess. You need to follow guys like Philippe Cousteau, who have been monitoring and recording the front lines for a while now.

Midi,

I knew they found the plume. I was referring to the fact that "they" kept saying there was no plume.

This entire thing is just so sad. Spoke to my daughter this evening. She lives in Mobile, Ala. and says it is bad there. One thing she did mention was that there were more people working the beaches, cleaning up than the news is reporting. She has several friends who are working for the oil company cleaning up beach oil and they told her the only time the news companies come around is when the workers are at lunch--at least in the Mobile area. Good to know work is being done. She said the area is full of workers brought in to help.

Aye.

Does your mainstream news also note that BP is the law down there and won't allow journalists in a lot of the areas? What do you know about local police working for BP?
