The study revealed that sexual violence against men is also prevalent.

Nearly 20% of women in the US are raped or suffer attempted rape at some point in their lives, a US study says.

Even more women, estimated at 25%, have been attacked by a partner or husband, the Centers for Disease Control said.

The findings form part of the first set of results from a nationwide study surveying sexual violence by intimate partners against men and women.

More than 24 people a minute reported rape, violence, or stalking, it says, with 12 million offences reported.

Experts at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) described the results of the first year of the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey as "astounding".

Among the key figures included in the survey's findings were:
  • more than one million women reported being raped in the 12 months prior to the survey
  • more than six million women and men were a victim of stalking
  • more than 12 million women and men reported rape, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner over the course of a year.
Lifelong hurt

"People who experience sexual violence, stalking or intimate partner violence often deal with the effects for their entire life," said Dr Linda Degutis, director of CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.

Many of those attacked experience rape or sexual assault in their early years, with almost 80% of rape victims suffering their ordeal before before the age of 25.

Some 35% of women raped before they were aged 18 were also raped as adults, Dr Degutis added.

Among the effects measured by the study, Dr Degutis said, were increased fears for safety and incidents of post-traumatic stress among victims.

Clinical conditions including asthma, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, frequent headaches, chronic pain and difficulty sleeping were also more likely in women who are raped or subject to assault.

There were also clear findings about the incidences of attacks on men and observations about health impacts on men who suffer rape or sexual assault.

An estimated one in seven men has been raped, or endured an attempted rape at some point in their lives, the study finds.

Almost 53% of male victims experienced some form of intimate partner violence for the first time before the age of 25. Some 25% of male rape victims were first raped when they were 10 years old or younger, the findings show.

I was gang raped when I was 9 by four males (2 of whom were forced on me.) The leader and his brother never served any time, and are living a life free and clear, married, with children of their own. I have huge therapy and medical bills and am unable to have children. My current medical conditions are in my throat and pelvic region - both I believe resulting from unprocessed trauma. The other children involved were younger than I was, and one of them has been suicidal his entire life. The other is not very stable, but I am not in touch with him.

FWIW, my parents did not believe me when I told them, even when they saw the pain I was in, and the marks from being strangled. (I am not going to write any more details, so please don't ask. I just get outraged when I read those statistics, and I want to express some of that feeling here in a safe place.)

I am logging off and going out for a long walk! Exhale....

What are Some Rape Myths

Too often I think that problems are identified, sometimes with energies exhausted, better then they are ever fully and suitably supported and addressed.

Oh' and Thanks Ayesha for posting this.

Coming from my horrific personal experience, a lot of those statistics I can relate to and am a part of. Also, I am not shocked that 15 out of 16 don't do jail time. Getting the strength to notify authorities of it is not easy nor is dealing with the embarrassment of others knowing what happened. Unfortunately it's a crime that is easy to get away with..

I did report mine...years later. I reported to the sheriff and city police. The city police told me out right that it was a waste of there time and they would never be able to find the accessory in my case. The sheriff was better, a lot better ( they found the accessory too!)...but then the case was forgotten about when the detective was promoted. Its been 1 year, and I have heard nothing.

So even if you do report it...with results like that, sometimes I wondered why I put myself though the pain of reporting him?

I reported mine. It was declared a mistrial based on "insufficient evidence." My lesson- Never file a police report against a police officer- and expect to win.

Theoretically, I was raped at 15, but I was very drunk and mumbled no. I was in a violent relationship where sex was used to pacify situations, but I said yes, ok, in tears sometimes, but yes was still there. Then I was intimidated and felt too frightened to say no to a man who I'd invited into my house as a friend.

I don't think any of this would stand up in court. But scarily, I don't think any of those men would think for a moment that they raped someone. I would so like to see this as information given in sex education classes in schools, to boys and girls, to teach them what rape is.

The last couple days here I've seen and read some about rape. In addition to this it's bee in our local news. I woke up not that long ago this morning and in tears, ....still very, very, very sad with how I lost the love of my life, following me being raped at 19. I was so different after being raped, I felt so absolutely abandoned, alone, scared, very hurt and angry and I felt contaminated, worthless and was self-blaming. As weeks and months passed, I somehow concluded that in order for this to have happened to me that I must have deserved it because I must be evil and deserved such an evil act done to me.

I believed and understood that I couldn't possibly be worthy of love any longer, nor could I be any good anymore in relationship with the young man that I had been and for a very long time going steady with, (with he and I in love), ...that young man that I loved so, so much.

Anyhow about the anniversary of that rape 1 yr. later, I broke up with him and this forever ended that relationship.

25yrs. later it can hurt still. All those too, too many thoughts and feelings, the pure isolation that followed that rape, those fears, memories and that disconnect, it all makes me so very sad.

And, now this morning seeing before my eyes those many images from my memory of that rape, I feel  but most especially :(.

It doesn't surprise me either. What is also bad and underreported is male rape because men are very reluctant to admit it happened.

What is also shocking is that up until the 90s rape within marriage was tolerated. It was only recently the law was changed.

Also what sickens me is the tap on the wrist sentences serious offenders receive. Also the false rape allegations made by people which ruin innocent peoples lives and make it harder to prosecute genuine cases.
