Please.... try hard to go to the appointment. I was lucky and had just started serious symptons when I first saw my psychologist. I've been examined by many psychologists and psychitrists because my PTSD is work related and I'll have to say that they were all experiences that were helpful. Even the professionals that were on "the other side" of the legal issues were kind and understanding. I still cry all through appointsments now and then, but not often. For the first several years I would cry through all appointments related to my PTSD. If it happens, it happens. It is good to talk and cry and let your feelings out. Friends and family can have trouble experiencing this with you and are not trained to really help. I'm not saying that one can't lean on personal relationships for some help, but you really need to talk to people who have training and experience with this type of difficulty. You'll make it. Just try as hard as you can. If you fail, just try again. I just keep trying and things have gotten better. As my psychologist loves to say, "It is a slippery slope." You don't want to let yourself slide down too far because hauling yourself back up is difficult. Try to talk to the people who can help you stop yourself from sliding further down. Also, the more you know about PTSD the better you can help yourself to adjust to your life.
I spent my career working with children with severe behavior disorders and knew that mental health professionals were valuable and very helpful, but did not realize the value of just talking to a psychologist until I began having PTSD symptoms. And........if you are not pleased with the first professional you see, find another one. Once again, just keep trying and you will get the help you need.
I hope these comments were helpful and I haven't stepped outside of the bounds of what I can and cannot say on this forum:)
