Neighbor Shooting Got Me Upset.

I was taking a nap and woke to what I thought was a gunshot. I laid there for a few seconds listening and rolled over figuring it was a dream or something else.

Then I heard two more and I jumped up with my pistol and went the front door. Nothing out there. My Mom who's eighty and hard of hearing said oh it was my neighbor closing the hood of his car. She said go put your pistol up you just thought it was shooting.

I went to lay back down thinking I'm just imagining it. My head playing tricks again. Then I heard my Mom holler my name in that tone that you know something isn't right. I ran back to the front door and I could see somebody walking down the sidewalk. She said what is that in a tone that was little more upset.? Scared the crap out me.

My neighbor was walking down the sidewalk carrying a coon he had shot on his roof. My Mom asked him about it and he wasn't sure what to do with it. He wanted to make sure nobody wanted it and I told him no and he wasn't sure what to do with since the trash already ran today. I told him to call sanitation and they would pick it up.

I was glad it was something unimportant but it still has my adrenaline running. That was a couple of hours ago and I'm still dealing with the adrenaline. I have grown to hate the adrenaline.

I have to keep remembering to slow my breathing. It keeps coming back every five minutes or so. I hate this feeling.

I decided to post thinking it might calm me down a little. I'm not sure it's helped but it was worth a try. I guess I will go work in the yard maybe that will help.

Bill,

If gunshots are a trigger (and I imagine they are for most of us that are not avid hunters) being triggered and suffering the residual anxiety is totally normal. I hope you found some relief in the yard work. Certainly focused exercise is a great way to burn off the excess adrenaline.

Getting out into the world seems to help. The 4th of July and New Years Eve can be a problem sometimes but if I get out and drive around or go to the hardware store for instance it helps.

It gets me out of my head and being out I know all is OK with the world.
