New Here
Greetings,

I am a victim of early childhood sexual trauma. I was never able to find treatment in the mental health system and I have been in and out of therapy for 15 years. I was re-diagnosed in August this year as suffering from acute acute depression and told I had post-traumatic stress disorder. I thought that only persons in combat could have PTSD.

This was the only time in my mental health career that I could agreed with the diagnosis. I understood myself, not as a person with a “brain disease,” but as a person who was profoundly hurt and traumatized by the “awful things” that had happened to me, including sexual torture by my father from age 3 until 11 when she became pregnant with my father's child. I follow down the path of more self destruction in my life because of being told I has no good or useless.

Hi NJ Lady,

It is way too common a situation and it does oh so definitely cause PTSD, though some of the old fogie Psych's still won't come on board with that.

By the way, the previous therapies would likely be all for naught without the knowledge that you have PTSD. I believe that with a good specialist in the PTSD field, you can actually start getting some where, so be hopeful!

Welcome,

Bear

I have found a therapist who has finally helped me realize that I am a good person and I can heal.A wall of silence isolates childhood sexual abuse from the consciousness of the public mental health system. No place exists within the system’s information management structures to receive this data from clients. The whole system must be changed from the courts understanding to the person suffering to the doctors and therapist who are suppose to be helping. Why didn't anyone ever dx me with PTSD before? My story has always been the same. Although the forces of truth will continue to meet resistance, they appear to be forming a powerful movement, Anyone want to help change the system? Where do we begin?

Thanks, I'M learning how to use this site and watch how I word my postings. I need some understanding friends so nice to meet you.

I too am learning. Take care of yourself. One way to accomplish this is involve yourself here. Keep seeking. Keep reading. Keep learning.

Hi Njlady,
I too have Complex PTSD from childhood sex abuse.
However as soon as I came to the attention of the Mental Health Services - 2 years ago - I was immediately diagnosed. I know I was lucky to have stumbled upon a Community Psychiatric Nurse with a special interest in trauma. He immediately 'got it'. The system is 'slowly' changing. PTSD is more readily accepted and is no longer considered to be only related to combat.

The important thing is that now you have the diagnosis, work with it, and get appropriate therapy. You can move forward with this.

Take Care
