I went exploring at the zoo today. Need to do that more often, it was awesome not having so many people around.

My favorite photo from the day, and all he was doing was napping.

LMFAO... Oooooh that damn mountain! Lemme tell ya about the time I drove all the way arooooooound that sucker because I was supposed to be meeting someone to go hiking at “the mountain”, but they sent me the wrong GPS coordinates, so they drove to Ranier and I drove to Helen’s. Things only got worse from there. Rivers without bridges, phones -landlines, even!- with no service, countless where the hell are we???...

But, but.... St. Helen's and Rainier aren't thaaaaat far apart... right???? :hilarious:

The Mnt. St. Helen's photo is amazing. I remember when it blew its top, In May of 1980...Horrific and amazing at the same time. I lived in Washington, when it happened.

Thanks!!!! it's one of my favorite pictures of St. Helen's.

I'm not old enough to remember :( but we did get a small bit of ash even in my city. I do remember the following winter, it was miserable, even by Canadian standards. Same thing after Pinatubo blew.

One of my plates from the lab.
I think I took this one ~4 years ago now.

We were testing for the presence of starch degrading bacteria in some rotting leaves.

By making a mixture from the rotting leaves and saline that was loose enough to spread, we could then plate that solution onto a specific medium that would promote their growth, and incubate.

Iodine staining was used to identify the presence of these microbes because iodine turns dark purple in the presence of starch.

So as you can see from the patches that lack the purple colouring, we found those bacteria in our sample!

Yum, @berlinda !

I've always been fascinated by chainsaw artists, @gealach ....diggin' it.

So many soothing shots....thanks to all who share.

Your dragon fly moment, @shatter eyes , reminded me of a flutter-by moment I had two years ago. I freed it from a web and it later flew over and landed on my skirt and hung out with me for about 20 minutes or so. Such a special moment. Grateful for the reminder. My nervous system appreciates this thread and the nudge to go dig up this shot:

Wow flutter-by thanks for stopping by! These creatures have soul that is incredibly strong when they gift us their touch. To trust a human with their delicate body.

I remember my gramma telling me not to kill moths because they are spirits passing through their cycle and if they are killed they have to restart their journey. Since then though scared then as a child i tried to shooo them out of the house. They are scary when they bonk around. I wonder if moths get TBI. Later in life there had been times when i can speak whispers telling the moth i will bring it outside as there is no food inside. i wont hurt it dont be scared. Its calm.

Buttefly for 20 minutes that is a special moment indeed.
