Psychiatrist Not Addressing Trauma?

@katz I know!! , it took me a long time to realize that other families didn't break dishes when they were frustrated, or when other parents simply said " now, *insert name* we talked about this behaviour and we don't like it, please stop." When my father would simply smack me in the face and carry on with his day. I was blown away for a long time. It's sad really..

What do you mean by dissociating? Do you blank out? Shut down? Start rocking back and forth? What behaviors do you exhibit? It sounds like the psychiatrist is simply trying to take it slowly for your sake, in order to create a safe space. If you feel okay with telling him or her, perhaps you could just say this to him or her? It is hard to gauge how fast or slow to go with a client. The good ones let the client decide. If you want to discuss your trauma, just tell him. If he doesn't want to start there, it is okay to find another psychiatrist. Psychiatrists come from many different theoretical orientations. One size does not always fit all.

God bless your healing.

yes , he's my psychiatrist, and he is a psychiatrist who has specialized in trauma. Psychiatrist...
Good for you at having the courage to face it. Now you can give it meaning and make it useful. Believe it or not, I have met many clinicians who started their journey to their life's work precisely this way. Trauma is a reasonable reaction to an unreasonable situation.

God bless your healing!
