A study published this week examines the link between PTSD, cognitive impairment and dementia.

Study was done on emergency responders to the World Trade Centre, 9/11/2001.

The major findings are:
  • Link Removed of responders had scores indicating cognitive impairment, and 1.2 percent had scores that suggested possible dementia
  • Both MDD and PTSD were associated with cognitive impairment
  • Re-experiencing symptoms were strongly associated with cognitive impairment
PTSD and cognitive decline linked in 9/11 responders

The average age of study participants was 52.8 years, and they already displayed symptoms suggesting possible dementia.

Many of us here would've felt like we were getting dementia.

I nursed someone with dementia - there are no comparisons really. It is a completely different kettle of fish. Just because you dissociate or can't remember things at times - it is nothing like dementia. I suffer from severe cognitive impairment at times. I also have dissociation, memory loss, confusion, anxiety, depression, ocd, attachment disorder et al. But it is not the same as dementia.
