Quit Or Work?

Right now I am in a pickle and looking for advice and stories about experiences and such.
I cannot handle my job at the moment, it's too stressful and making everything exaggeratedly worse. Right now i am on a medical leave, but am struggling with the fact that I might have to quit my job.

For those of you have made that personal choice, to quit work and focus on yourselves and healing..how did you come to that conclusion? Did you talk to your doctor about it? Family etc?

Im just a little scared because of financial issues and such. Im hoping I can apply for provincial disability benefits to help pay my bills if that is what I decide.

Like most things with PTSD, there is no pat answer to this. It's all up the individual, their circumstances, what they can handle, what they can't handle, what they need. It has to be your decision based on what you need.

As for me personally, working helps me to get out of my head and focus on things other than what run through my head all day, every day. Not working is not good for me. But again, that's just me. Others have other reasons for what they do.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

I struggle to work... But if I don't, I get dangerously depressed instead.

Have you considered part time? Or would that not be an option? Part time would be ideal for me, but unfortunately the financial aspect would never allow it. But I don't know about you, wherever you are...

I feel for you, MissASG...

This is just my opinion here, I think you ultimately know whats good for you, so plse take my reply as suggestions..

If your work is causing you so much stress on top of your PTSD symptoms, and it is plainly pulling you down, then I would say that it is not in your best interests to continue to stay there..

I do not know how good your job is, and what it would cost for you to quit and find another, down the road.. For myself, losing my wonderful job just recently, has been extremely painful to me. But, if staying there ruins your health and drives you further down, then none of that matters if it pulls you deeper into the grave.

Do you feel that you are capable of working in another job, if the same stressors weren't there, as the old one? I do not know what line of work you are in, and if that is feasible...

Boy, I do understand your concerns about your finances. I feel scared too.. But, you can get disability benefits from the Gov't, if the claim is accepted. That is always the biggest hurdle. I can tell you from my experience, that I have received benefits from the gov't, and currently I am sending out for another type (CPP) to continue the coverage to present day. Actually, 2 of my ptsd support group members are on it, so that gives me a lot of hope. If you should choose to go this route and you need help with any of that stuff, plse feel free to PM me because I live in Canada too.

Take care of yourself  Tija

Hi MissASG,

I am currently experiencing the same issues. Work is making me more ill due to the stress I get from it, but I can't even think about quitting because me and my partner wouldn't be able to support our family.

I know I should put my health first and so should you, but it is hard when there are other underlying factors to think of.

I hope you manage to find the answer you need.
