Quote Of The Day

Since my friends didn't stand up for me I urge other people to speak out, because you can't ignore an army of voices. I would like to see people stand up for those that have been assaulted. Because the words of our enemies aren't as awful as the silence of our friends. Daisy Coleman

If you stand silently and watch another being abused, you give the abuser power. This kind of silence can hurt as much as the abuse.

"People who are burdened by acute misgivings about their coping capabilities suffer much distress and expend much effort in defensive action... they cannot get themselves to do things they find subjectively threatening even though they are objectively safe. They may even shun easily manageable activities because they see them as leading to more threatening events over which they will be unable to exercise adequate control." ~ Albert Bandura (the originator of social learning theory renamed social cognitive theory and the theoretical construct of self-efficacy)

"If you're not willing or able to be the type of person that is willing to be uncomfortable for 5 minutes alone in the shower where the only negative outcome is you being cold is you being cold for 5 minutes and the only person affected by that decision is you. How will you ever have the strength or courage to choose to be uncomfortable in a situation where the outcomes are much much greater and the people affected by your decision far outnumber just yourself." ~ Joel Runion, Mission Impossible HQ - Cold Shower Therapy

Still on a fiction binge. From my last novel:

“She struggled to distinguish between signs she received from the universe and those she conjured up in her head.”

“I have traveled through continents, languages, and time trying to understand all that I am and all that has made me such.”

“She laughed for her wasted, difficult life that never had to be wasted or difficult in the first place.” ~ Leslye Walton, The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender

“North Star: Hooray if you're ready, however overdue it may seem, to peel back the layers. If you're not, remind yourself that inside you, along with all the pieces you're afraid to look at, are big chunks of courage and resiliency you rely on without even realizing that you do so. They're so fundamental that they've steered you capably through most of life.” ~ Helen S. Rosenau

“For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them.” ~ Aristotle, The Nicomachean Ethics

“Happiness does not lie in amusement; it would be strange if one were to take trouble and suffer hardship all one's life in order to amuse oneself” ~ Aristotle, The Nicomachean Ethics

“Happiness then, is found to be something perfect and self sufficient, being the end to which our actions are directed." ~ Aristotle, The Nicomachean Ethics

It’s just hard to bear in mind when the hard drive crashes or the shower drain clogs first thing in the day. Apparently I can only ever attain that God’s-eye view in the grip of the talons.Tim kreider

One reason we rush so quickly to the vulgar satisfactions of judgment, and love to revel in our righteous outrage, is that it spares us from the impotent pain of empathy, and the harder, messier work of understanding.
-Tim kreider

“You are not hidden... there has never been a moment you were forgotten.” -Lauren Daigel in her song Rescue

It’s probably not hugely inspiring for others, and the whole song about a rescue doesn’t strike a chord with me but in the middle of massive fears stirred up that the abuse will happen again... the simple phrase brings me back to an element of spirituality that brings a steadiness to my nerves.

This sentence has five words. Here are five more words. Five-word sentences are fine. But several together become monotonous. Listen to what is happening. The writing is getting boring. The sound of it drones. It’s like a stuck record. The ear demands some variety. Now listen. Vary the sentence length, and I create music. Music. The writing sings. It has a pleasant rhythm, a lilt, a harmony. I use short sentences. And I use sentences of a medium length. And sometimes, when I am certain the reader is rested, I will engage him with a sentence of considerable length, a sentence that burns with energy and builds with all the impetus of a crescendo, the roll of the drums, the crash of the cymbals – sounds that say listen to this, it is important.
