Magical realism has a realistic setting But elements of fantasy, either implicitly or explicitly whether as storyline or metaphors. Sometimes it’s a small element, sometimes it’s a main feature.
So unlike, say Narnia or the Shires with fawns and elves the setting might be Calcutta or a mall.
I believe it’s a tradition we saw in folktales and fairytales.
Literarily there is a pretty good tradition of South American writers in this area. Gabriel García Márquez is the pinnacle. Other well known writers who use this device are Salmon Rushdie, Joanne Harris. Um...it’s frequently found. Sometimes it’s brilliant. Sometimes it’s not!
