I used to work in a specialized field that never uses recruiters, a few years ago a recruiter offered me a position with a company I had no interest in. He called me today, as I began to listen to the voice mail I thought he might have a real offer to make, it turned out he wanted me to help him find a job for someone else by giving him information on companies in the area.

Because he was looking for free advice I called him back and left voice mail saying I would be more than glad to help and my consulting rate was $100.00 and hour. Problem solved.

I actually had an electronics company do something similar to me, they laid me off but wanted me to "consult" for pennies on the dollar writing programming form printed circuit board manufactuing. I told them I'd do it for the equivalent of time and a half unless the time was less than 200 hours. They didn't call me back either.
