I've always been a science fiction geek. I'll admit it, proudly. Some of the best schools of thought I've encountered through it. The takes on modern day issues translated into sci fi have really struck at the heart of society. One of the better ones out there (and yes, I still think it was cheesy) is Star Trek.

Today marks the passing of one of the actors to one of my favorite science fiction characters: Leonard Nimoy, best known for his role as the Vulcan 1st Officer named Spock of The USS Starship Enterprise, passes away at the age of 83.

I just want to say that I really loved the man. He's been a positive influence on myself from the tender age of 5 watching him on Saturday morning reruns with my dad.

Leonard Nimoy, RIP. You are very much missed.

As my brother and I grew up...Star Trek was our hope for a better world. We didn't just watch...we drew in breath of the role models witnessing the respect between & among the crew. Despite those differences among them, we saw an empowered Black Woman, an Asian, a Russian with true aliens...Spock...make the world a better place. Peace and good prevailed outside of the local earth bound negative biases. And a woman owned the station it ran on...Lucille Ball.

We needed to believe people would someday accept 'us' as we were first generation off the reservation -Native American descent and felt the sting of difference. We watched the technology within the series of personal computers, transporters, communication devices and much to our delight...my brother helped invent several items that he lusted for in Star Trek years later. He became a consummated and respected geek: while I, the virtual teacher -working on-line at home as a Professor with my personal computer in 1998. I can not tell you how many people in my family told me to get a real job! The talking flip phone when it came about...oh you know the ring tone.

Yet Spock...he was my main hero, (and even my adult son & DIL send me little Spock gifts on Holidays)...because Spock's script offered words with understanding what it was to be part of one culture and also part of another...yet fully embraced by neither. He gave a child (me) hope...that someday...I would be accepted in logical embrace as an equal.
For that, alone...he has my heart and tears over his passing.

Mr. Gene Rodenberry...please take good care of our Mr. Spock.

Ah to be like a Vulcan and in total control of my emotions instead of feel so ruled by them.
When I was a kid I went to see The Wrath of Khan with my older brother. I waited patiently for the tide to turn, for the plot twist. Instead, the credits rolled and the lights came up.
I bawled "they Killed SPOCK"
It is like losing that beloved uncle. He was a hero and a figure of everything I wished I was: respected, smart, male, in control but not cruel, the person people went to for advice.
No, it's not "logical" but I too will miss Leonary Nimoy.
HIs last tweet is apt:
"A life is like a garden: perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory."

Rodenberry, Kelley, Doohan, and the one I thought would live forever Nimoy.
Small parts of our childhood die.
LLAP? Boldly go, gentlemen....

Growing up, the only constant in my life was the irrational and unpredictable behavior of my abuser. When I found the logic of Mr. Spock, I was hooked. Forget rainbows and butterflies. Logic, that was magical.

RIP Leonard Nimoy, you were a class act.
