I've been out and about today, both in the car and out for a walk. A road was closed, just round the corner from where I live. Police have been in presence all day. I have just discovered that a huge house fire killed 2 young children (3 and 6 years) about 06:30 this morning. Parents and 3 siblings escaped (one of who jumped from a first floor window).

My heart goes out to the family and friends of those involved, but also to my colleagues and friends who will have dealt with this. I work very close to home - so this is my 'patch'. I know the fire got a very quick response from both ambulance and fire crews, but it's hard to accept that I was just around the corner, desperately trying to sleep, when other were suffering complete tragedy and devastation.

Sleep tight little ones. RIP

This story goes to the heart of my problems - a similar fire killed 3, all under 10, along with the father who died later in hospital. To my continuing amazement, even after all these years, the mother and elder daughter moved back into the house once it had been rebuilt. Sadly, having been the investigating officer, the images come back and bring tears to my eyes whenever I hear something like this.
