General Same Old Thing - Hubby Going Backward Again

Yes Kathy I agree with you! It was never heard of years ago I still try to explain it to people when they ask whats wrong with him?

Perhaps you should tell them it is a brain disorder and leave it at that? It truly is biological in nature, not simply a matter of being "nervous" or "high strung". Their brains are forever altered. On MRIs done of Evie's brain, you can see the PTSD in her hippocampus. It is very real. It is not unlike schizohophrenia, epilepsy or autism in that regard, although different areas of the brain are effected obviously.

Mum is right, older people just don't seem to get it. They don't "get" any kind of mental illness that I've noticed. I think mental illnesses in general were much more of a stigma in the days when my grandparents were young. Not much was known about them then. PTSD wasn't even an official diagnosis, and it certainly wasn't known that it effected the brain, it was thought to be entirely psychological. I think Jen, Mum is right, concentrate on the physical aspects of PTSD maybe in that case, like that it does effect the brain. If they don't understand that well... they are hopelessly old and outdated! ;)

Hey Jen. I was just wondering how you are doing this week? Did you get out to golf yet, is your hubby eating all the bad foods, and how is the waking up and getting to work going? Thinking of you,

bec

Thanks Bec no things are about the same I did manage my day off he got out of bed at a reasonable hour on THAT day!
Still eating junk I am at work through the day he goes and buys pies and chips for lunch.
I must remember to start making lunch for him!
I know he is in bed until midday when I am at work.

Evie thank you for your wise words thats it with the older generation if there is an physical injury they understand why the person is not functioning but they really dont seem to want to know about any mental illness years ago things like that were brushed under the carpet?

Well that is progress if he made it out of bed that day! LOL

As for the junk, I'm just as guilty on that one! *zips mouth shut*

Glad to see you hanging in there. Your doing such a great job. It's obvious you are really there for him, love him and try your best. Just thought you should get a little acknowledgment on that!

bec

Thanks Bec he seems to be having a shit week again very down. He bit my head of last night for something.
I was so tempted to say something to him along the lines that I am all he has got which is true as he has lost all his mates over the time but I thought I probably should not upset him any more than what he is at the moment?
I would love to know what gets him in these depression stages????

Have you noticed a pattern Jen? My daughter has a very definite pattern. Don't know if that makes any sense. However. She seems to crash after too much stress. Can almost see it coming now, though I still make many mistakes with her. Has your husband been under any added stress? Anything out of the usual routine? In any event, well done. Hang in there.

Jim.

Not that I can think of Jim! I understood when his Dad died that he crashed for a couple of weeks.
But lately life has been fairly normal that I can think of I suppose it doesnt need much to trigger them off hey!

Jen, he is a veteran, correct? I believe you have Remembrance Day in Australia as well? Would Remembrance Day last weekend have triggered or bothered him?

Thats it Kathy I dont really know what sets him of? It may have been that?
As Anthony said once we live in a Military city there are probably heaps of triggers here I have mentioned to him a few times does he like it here and he does.
Maybe he has to try and deal with these triggers he did a clinic last year and learnt how but he doesnt seem to practice the exercises they showed him as in breathing etc.

He worries a lot about our financial situation as we own a small business but it is going ok. He nearly broke us by spending frantically last year thats when he crashed and I took over all the finances for the business and now its doing ok?

I want a research grant to study the lunar cycles & the effects on ptsd moods.

This week has just been one of those ones where it is hard to pick what has caused a low point for our sufferers.:wall:

Whatever it is I wish it would hurry up & go away, xmas is around the corner & they need all their energy to make it through that one day! (Not to mention the lead up to it)

Oh well, here's to a better week ahead for all of us!:Hug_emoticon:
