I'm making fun of myself by telling this story. It's a little long but might make you laugh a little. It happened a couple weeks ago. No politics! I promise!
I'm about ready to go to bed but before I do that I want to shake the dust out of a throw rug. I open the door of my apartment at the same time as my neighbor. I'm startled, I shriek, jump, and hit my head on a light fixture. I finish shaking out the rug, go upstairs to my apartment, and put a band aide on my wounded forehead. Stop shaking, you're safe I tell myself.
Next I'm in a panic because I can't find the shells for my shot gun (security blanket). What are you doing? You don't need that. It's not hunting season, you don't like hunting, and there's no targets in your apartment. You're safe! Just go to bed. Like I'm actually going to be able to sleep now - wrong!
I pace in my apartment for a while. This is ridiculous. I put my long underwear and winter apparel on and go for a walk. An hour later I'm really tired - should be able to get some sleep now. I sleep for about two hours but then I'm wide awake staring at the ceiling. I get up and lift weights and exercise for a couple hours. My alarm clock is buzzing.
I'm still in a hyper viligant state but it's time to go to work. At least I'm not tired - too much adrenaline. Once I get to work I remember that I need to make a wire transfer. I remember the account and routing numbers without looking at the paperwork but can't remember the password to log onto the computer system. It's the same password I've been using for 4 years. What's wrong with me? I take a walk around the building thinking it "will come to me". As I'm doing that I try to greet a coworker. I can't remember his name but I remember his wife's name and his dog's name. I go back to my desk and dig around until I find the piece of paper where I wrote down the password years ago. Whew!
It was a long one but I made it through the day at work. I stopped at the grocery store on the way home. I forgot my list but remembered all 10 items I intended to purchase. Good think I had cash because I couldn't remember the PIN number for my debit card. I was only in the store for 15 minutes but I forgot where I parked my car. I remembered the license number but didn't even know which direction to look. So there I was wandering around the parking lot like a lost puppy with my grocery bags in 4 degree (Farenheit) temperatures. I finally found it! I'm okay now. Just go home I tell myself, this will pass and tomorrow will be a better day.
I'm home now. I should go get my mail but first I ask myself "are you going to need a GPS so you don't get lost and freeze to death trying to find your way home from the mail box".
