Hey... I went private after I got out. Although that term didn't exist back then. Then, you got caught, you were likely to lose your citizenship. But I didn't know what else the f*ck to do. Couldn't go back to the USMC, couldn't wait tables, clueless about PTSD (I'd been dx'd but that meant keep me out in the field as much as possible, not seek treatment)...and a friend hands me a stack of cash to run back down to South America with him? Sure. Why the f*ck not? Viva la resistance. Same shit, same side, better pay, right?
True...there are a few outfits (like State, not that head appreciate that description, I'm sure) which will treat you fairly. Most of the time.
And if you're linked up with someone good, then yeah. I've felt so bad for all my brothers and sisters who have no f*cking say in anything, and get shit training, and shit gear... While I'm sporting Armani (Google Armani of bullet proof clothing, and of you're ever in Columbia, pick some up. Esp if you're ever considering being an EMT in Dubai or some shit. They don't list all their shit online anymore, but dude's crazy. Sheets, for f*cks sake. Tshirts that will stop a .22. Civvies looking gear that will stop anything short of a rocket. Granted your insides will be jelly, but you'll be pretty on the outside. Really, though, most of the stuff is top notch useful. And the owner? Don't know if he still does it, but he used to let you shoot him as a product demo. Chaseus.)
Most of em?
Shit, son. It really is whoever out crazies the most wins.
I've been left behind (all of us, unit just writ off) more times than I can count. f*cking starving.
And they take your passport before you touch down in country, so getting out of country is a stone bitch if they do leave you.
This was pre-Iraq.
I've got friends (post 911) in who, yeah, 100 or 200k for 6mo. Which is actually kind of shit pay. Pre911 and all of us PTSD'ers needing to stay busy/flooded market, it was more like 10k a week in most of the stuff I did. But I digress.
But my friends post 911? At the end of your contract, you get dumped outside the green zone if you don't renew. Shut the f*ck up. That's one whole helluva lot worse than just being left to fend for yourself, and if you want to get paid make your way home. That's f*cking murder.
My stuff was all gig work. A few weeks here, a few there. Sometimes just a long weekend. Xfil. Ha. I couldn't say "long weekend" without getting sick for a helluva long time.I know guys who were stuck in the Middle East 7+ years with no f*cking way out, no breaks, no nothing. Just playing roulette. Going seriously batshit. And if they skipped, then they're in breech of contract and lose their cash /or are unhireable. Most of the saner ones said f*ck it, and bailed, and caught a ride to Sri Lanka or somewhere far far away. Because few newbies are smart enough to get direct deposit. And if hey ask they don't get the job. Nope. It's a big f*cking advance, and then the rest upon completion. Meaning never.
I think I know 2 people still alive/ playing that particular game.
Both hooked up with State.
Don't get me wrong, there are good companies out there. Theres an air wing based out of Portland that has (had, at least) a f*cking stellar reputation for taking care of their people. State has a good rep. Some UK groups.
Just don't grass is greener on the private side.
For every person taken care of like your friend... There are hundreds, maybe thousands, left to rot.
And yeah, you can make your bank if you make it out.
But you're also buying your own gear (and paying replacement cost for lost/used gear in some of these f*cktwat fly by nights. Not just your own armor, ammo, and weapons, but vehicles. Know how much a CH46 costs? A lot. Never sign to be a principle in someone else's company, it means you'll owe millions), paying your own medical, and more than half the time coming out skint at the end of it.
That part doesn't get a lot of attention.
There are good companies. Most aren't.
Most are just a way to suicide while feeling like you're doing something useful and maybe earn a few bucks for your family. If you're smart & lucky enough to have a good contract, and a good company, that will actually pony up and pay your family.
Christ. This is probably all massive over share. But I talk about it about never.
