Skimming Words

I find myself often misreading words. I notice ut the most when browsing funny and gifs in reddit. The title will describe what the link is about. I skim over it and then find out I'm at a loss of what the subject matter is about. I go back a page and re-read a completely different title to what my mind thought it was. Some of the letters are similar, but just that one word had changed the meaning entirely.

Sometimes I'll get it on this site as well.

Anyone else experience this? As far as I can tell it's normal for some people, aka it's not something that is pointing towards anything life-threatening.

@LuckyDuck , I get this!!!! For me, the misreads are very mood dependent.

I remember a few months ago I was really low, and I was at a sport's practice. One of the women there had a t-shirt and I misread the word 'save' as 'slave.' I can't remember the exact phrasing on the t-shirt but my mind turned it for the worse. Strangely, I re-read the shirt multiple times and it read the same with a message about being a slave rather than being saved. It was only at the end of practice when we circled up that I re-read it and this time saw the word 'save.'

My mind definitely plays tricks with me; that one made me laugh a bit.

I went into a local restaurant, as I am reading the board, I saw Paisley Potatoes... it is Parsley Potatoes, I go there often, so know the owners well, told them and we laughed, now I simply ask for Paisley Potatoes..... and they know what I am talking about..... For me, I just laugh when I see things not as they are.. normal for me, ya know, like PTSD . I don't always see things as they are.

LMAO... I've done this my entire life. :) :D :roflmao:

I often do double takes, just because... Wait. Did that say what I think it just said ???

<grin> Sometimes, yes. Which is why my friends get pictures of random ass shit sent to them on a fair regular basis. Like the very standard 'No Animals Allowed; Except Service Dogs, & Husbands' sign. Wait. Yes. It did in fact read and husbands. My butcher is always pulling that kind of stunt. Next week the sign will be back to normal, while something else in the shop gets something silly amended, and in a few months 'and husbands' will rotate back in :p

Other times  Nope! Just my brain. Transposing letters, whole words, or altering images to suit itself. Whether it's seeing what it expects to see, or making shit up to entertain itself? Depends on the day.

I do this also. Even with the way I communicate because I talk in shorthand. It is a source of grief for me not being able to better communicate nor paying attention to what I read. I thought I was the only one that did this. Trying now to pay more attention to both what I read and what I say, practice, practice, practice.

Glad to know I'm not alone. :) Makes me wonder if the reason behind our experiences are related or not. I know it's not directly related to PTSD but maybe the way the brain takes in information may have a similar route in the brain.
