When I had my pooch in dog obedience class, I was unable to take advantage of the 4 out of seven classes because I could not run or walk my dog concerning leash training. The instructor had no suggestions for me on how to do the training, in light of my disability. So, discouraged, I was not able to complete the course. I was not able to walk/run the pup with a leash in hand with the other hand available for giving reward treats, and use a cane, at the same time.
Last night at the dog park, there was a young guy who had a pup with him. He had him in an obedience class, and he was using a leash that attached around his waist like a cloth Army belt. He was able to walk his pup, hands free!!!! As needed, he only had to grab the part of the leash that attached to his dog's collar to give direction, otherwise his waist belt secured his dog.
He said he got it at PetSmart. So, this cane-totin' gal is gonna go get one. I could easily walk my dog this way, and still use my cane. Mine is not a big dog, so he will not pull so hard as to pull me off balance. I can't trot with him, but I certainly can teach him to walk to one side, stand in front of me, and sit while on the leash, as needed. I especially want him to stand between me and strangers who come up to talk.
I don't know how many others, here, have walking issues and use a cane, but this seems to be a huge plus for me. I just thought I would share this hands-free leash. Don't know the name of it, though.
