owls to be a picture of Bubo the mechanical owl from the 1981 Clash of The Titans

Hi rainy_daze, YES - I like Bubo very much to, indeed. (And by the way, IMO the 1981 original movie was the best!)

If I get this right, the owl will stand as a symbol of wisdom, as you can read the following link:

After Anthony's posting, the discussion about owls, wisdom, and other (some funny) things started.

Wow, I am not sure I will ever make it to the owl level then, I am currently at one dove. The whole raindow thing confused me. For example, what colour is my dove just now? Is that violet, or are my eyes going funny?

I have honestly read this thread, there's just so many posts on it I haven't managed to take anything out of it other than this is a ranking system that is being designed to reflect member input via posts which will feature a symbol of some kind that will grow darker and there will be a progress bar below the symbol.

If the hiearchy begins with doves (of many colours), then moves to owls (of many colours), what is after that? Do we move onto some other kind of bird? Or are owls the super ultimate PTSDforum poster? Because owls are the wisest of them all.

I don't know Anthony, but I like to think he's rolling his eyes at this thread he started round about now.

Haha, he may be.

I think the owls are supposed to be the "upper rank". I don't think there's an intention of having anything go above them.

As for the colors, it goes through the rainbow backwards: purple, violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, red. You get a dove every 140 posts, and yes, you will collect 4 doves of every color.

@'91 Girl: you have been paying attention to the whole thread. Thank you very much for clearing all that up.

When I start seeing people with owls then I will ask for further birds to be added (I realise I am only making myself laugh, but fairly enjoying my own humour). How many posts in total would it take to get to owl? Have I calculated it correctly, that you would need to post over 3920 to have collected all the doves in every colour? I am really bad at maths.

I thought at first it was based on your whole interaction, rather than just the amount you have posted, for example liking what someone has posted? I do need to obsessing about this thread, because I can feel the gamer in me desperate to get to "owl level" and this isn't a computer game. I would not be a wise owl in my own life, so I think my current dove level is quite appropriate.

Ha ha, '91 Girl, I know it isn't a competition; I was just so proud the first time I earned a trophy on PTSDforum. It feels silly thinking about it now, but I was feeling so awful about myself and I was so disconnected from the world around me that winning that trophy made me feel ecstatic. It was for 10 likes I had received or something.

I know I will never post more than 4060 posts though, I don't think that is achievable for me.

Nonetheless, I don't base the advice or support given to me from other people on anything other than the content of their posts, or how long they have been a member. I will admit, an owl is impressive, but it wouldn't mean I would take the post of an owl over the post of a purple dove, because everyone has value to say. There also might one day be someone who is wise like an owl in their life who comes onto the forum to give advice, yet would only be a purple dove level. I would, however, ask the owls how to navigate my way around the forum if I was new, but if I was new the whole doves and owls thing would confuse me until someone explained it to me. Thinking back to when I first joined here, it took me a while to learn things that weren't covered in the introduction (for example I kept wondering why brackets were around usernames, until someone told me it was a cuddle). Will the dove progression be included in any of the help pages for new members, so they know what it is all about? For example, when explaining about your avatar and profile page, there will be a section about the dove?

If we can tell if someone is new from this system, is this to enable us to support them better? What is the overall purpose of the whole system - I thought it was to help you track your own progress to see how much you had engaged and were recovering? Someone could appear as if they are a new member, but have actually been here for a long time but not posting very often. Someone could be well along the path to recovery but doesn't like to post much.

I hope my questions and ramblings are counting as feedback on the idea of a rank system.

I think part of healing is that interaction and communication. Listening is good, but I don't think you heal from only listening. Someone who isn't posting may be knowledgable, but is probably not as healed as someone who is posting and interacting.

I do think you bring up some valid points regarding the new members. I do hope there will be some sort of explanation available.

Oh, thanks, that's really sweet it made you smile (I am smiling back).

Someone who isn't posting may be knowledgable, but is probably not as healed as someone who is posting and interacting.
That is a very good point. You could have someone who only posts in the chit chat and posts there so often that they have built up their dove level though. I mean, I don't post in the diary section, but I still have a few hundred posts, so I am interacting and communicating, but possibly not to the same degree as others (who share their trauma as part of exposure therapy); if I continued to do that for long enough = as in several years, if I average at 300 posts a year = I would earn an owl. I can see if you posted regularly enough in lots of parts of the forum you would have a lot more posts than a few hundred... I am just thinking about all the possibilities.

Yes, no matter what system is used, there will be issues like that, I think. But hopefully, people are on here to do more than chit chat, at least in theory.

Overall, I like the system. I would like to know who is more familiar with PTSD and this forum to help me out. I will listen to everyone, but someone with more experience is going to be considered just a little ahead of someone else in my mind. Maybe I'm wrong to do that, but I do.
