It's very difficult to separate intolerable and/ or dehumanizing actions from the 'human-ness' of the person, let alone the need or hope for change, validation, care, acceptance or love. And that's not touching on the way it erodes your self-esteem and soul.
I think feeling empathy, love +/or understanding (which I cannot help) is best (ideally) balanced by not needing to be physically present with them, and building my own life. And of course good coping skills, support, and emotional detachment, if possible.
