The Body Keeps Score

I wish this would be brought out with new research added.

I’ll be honest. I wanted to hate this book. I don’t know why. A resistance to the idea of somatic presentation? That I felt buying something ‘self helpy’ Would define me?

What a fool I was.

It’s incredible, and tops my list of the PTSD books I have read.

I just finished the book, It's Not You, It's What Happened to You by Cristine Courtois and I think this is a short book, a good first trauma book, that has lots of information, explains trauma and PTSD in the simplist of terms, and the different kind of therapy and such. A good beginning trauma book. While I knew a lot from reading other books, I would have appreciated this book, before The Body Keeps the Score.

I have this book, actually I initially got the audio version through Audible and then I ordered the hard-copy as well. I like having it in both audio and reading. This was recommended to me by my therapist several times but I was reluctant. Once I did get it and listen to it and read it I found it to be really helpful. The body really does keep the score...much more so than I ever realized, or wanted to realize. Trauma and the ramifications of trauma have been very hard for me to even recognize, much less try to verbalize and, honestly, even believe. I still have a lot of denial but this book has helped a lot with helping me to at least understand.

I
Be happy to talk about it yes @Shadoe :)

I loved Pete Walker's website, found the information there really helpful, but I found his books repetitive and not as good.

We're all different aren't we
Best :)

Yeah I've got his book it got boring after a while and some of things like the strict labels were irritating to read through. I believe people have multiple ways they deal with things and difference defended due to their environment. I've read most of the body keeps score very interesting book but sometimes tough to read especially the bits involving incest but very glad they mentioned the research. I feel sorry for the guy trying to change the system and not having success, I haven't been in his shoes but I've tried advocating for mental health and sometimes it's a very steep uphill battle. Have a good evening Belinda.

It's a hard thing to recognise and see. I did have a very strong denial reaction because it was a loved one that abused me so it is hard to face alone. You're a courageous person for coming forward and the book really does explore many of the reactions to trauma which is interesting. I'm glad we can talk about it, the more we all talk the less the shame around talking about trauma, it shouldn't be a taboo because it's such a hideous problem that we need to look in the eye and deal with as a society so we don't turn a blind eye to vulnerable adults and children.

I hear you.....it is a very good book....and I reread it a couple of times. Packed with valuable info!

Very true, it is super informative and I'm glad we're armed to the teeth with knowledge and we can thwart misconceptions because there's so bleeding many around trauma.

You have just reminded me about this book. I got it and read it some 9 or 10 years ago, and found it very helpful. It still sits in my cupboard with diaries from the time. I hope I don’t need it again, but I will dip into it should I feel like it.
