The Sociocognitive Model Of Dissociation

They are constructs, and also are pretty darned people in their own right.

Or: personality is always a construct. Just because of that fact people aren't less people, and less mattering, whether they're one or many in which ever way, though.

.

Precisely! And they are autonomous. Whatever they are, they have their own wills and their own selfs-concepts to a greater or lesser degree. It's not something that I'm just playing pretend with, it's something that occurs without generally having my permission or me being aware.
My growing edge is to become aware of what they are doing and get us all on the same page.

Everything that you people talk about is so over my head!

My psychiatrist said that a lot of DID is created by therapists, but then she is a fan of Warrick Middleton who apparently is one of the people to see if you have DID in Australia. I watched his youtubes - and he is very funny. He said psychiatrists would ring him and say that they didn't believe in DID, oh and they have a referral for him that he should see urgently. So it all occupies a funny never never place.

I have parts, and I have structural dissociation. I have tried to read this on the forum and I have a huge resistance to even thinking about it.

I believe firmly in parts & in structural dissociation. I think that alters are a sociocognitive construct used to explain the existence of parts. Alternative constructs include 'voices in the head' and 'demonic possession'.

I think that naming and clear identification of alters reinforces separateness, and I've seen it (in myself and in friends) lead to an emotional investment in separateness, which is not very good. So I think there is merit in the paper linked in the OP. But yeah, the structural disassociation model all the way, for me.

I am still quite confused as to what to define an alter as. It acts on it's own. I have no idea what happens when it's doing it's thing (other than when people tell me). But recently something new has been happening, the 2 most noticable that seem more like I don't know what, are getting an adition of something that seems to function as a person, with thinking maybe. Taking pills, getting to safety. It's doing stuff
