It's a dilemma when you're on a tight budget. I'm really glad we still have an independent health food shop, but a lot of things are cheaper online or in the big chains. There are some things that are actually cheaper or much the same price in the independent, luckily, so I still get those there.

Another scheme had empty shop landlords, allowing people to display their work in empty shop windows. Much nicer than seeing boarded up shops.

They do that where I am. One of them is used by a primary school to display the kids' artwork. They follow themes like the Olympics or St George's Day. The pictures of Kate and William for the royal wedding were hilarious.

I think it is so sad to see the small buisinesses go under for the larger stores. I guess it is the wave of the future. Interesting thread.

I've just bought 2 sofa's from a major furniture retailer. It is very sad that there are no small furniture shops in our town any more. I think furniture, especially sofa's and beds, need to be tested before you buy them so I ma glad that there are at least some furniture stores left.
